Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I passed the Wyzant Algebra screening test with 100% !!!!! Been doing algebra for a while and I just love solving the little puzzles and helping others to learn how to do it too.

Algebra 2

I enjoy doing algebra and love supporting others in learning how to do algebra.

CBEST

I have taken and passed the CBEST exam on my first attempt. I have a strong educational background of B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D. I was brought up in an English educational system and trained in the proper use of the English Language. I have also taught in two U.S. universities and been on the tenured faculty. I am very well equipped to help people pass the CBEST exam.

Computer Programming

I first started programming in 1963 on the Edsac Computer in Cambridge iUniversity in England in a high level language called Autocode. I then learned and programmed in Pascal, Fortran and Forth. I even did a little assembly language programming for a 6502 on an Apple II. I have taught C++ at Regis College in Denver. I have learned and written software in Java, dBase II and Algol. I have taught a course in Access and these days usually use VBA for developing software. I co-edited a book called "Applications of Sea Going Computers". I have used paper tape, punched cards, video terminals etc to program computers. I have a Ph.D. and currently teach computer classes for people with severe mental illnesses using WikiMedia to develop courses.

Computer Science

I taught Computers at Regis College, Denver and am currently teaching computer skills at a learning center. I first used computers in 1962 on the Edsac Computer at Cambridge University, England. I co-edited a book on the "Use of computers at sea."

DOS

I used Apple DOS on an Apple II way back when. I also used it for a long time on an early PC and have written many batch files and still write them occasionally today.

English

English is my native language and I was educated in a British type school system where I was taught how to use the English language correctly and clearly. I successfully wrote a Ph.D. thesis for Cambridge University in England and have read and reviewed Ph.D. theses of students when I was on the faculty of UCSD.

Fortran

I did a lot of Fortran II programming in the seventies and eighties as part of my scientific career . I wrote real time software for the navigation of underwater objects for use on shipboard computers (IBM1800) at sea. Also I developed software in Fortran for use on a Burroughs 6500 to calculate magnetic fields. This software was called MagSys and a technical document describing its use was published by the Scripps Instituion of Oceanography, University of California San Diego as a SIO Reference.
I currently teach computer classes to people with mental illness and have taught computer classes at Regis College, Denver.
Is there any more information you would like from me which would enable you to feel comfortable in qualifying me to tutor Wyzant students? If so please contact me.
Thanks for allowing me to submit my qualifications for tutoring Wyzant students in Fortran
John M., Ph.D.

Geometry

I passed the Wyzant exam with a 90% score. The question I got wrong, I missed because I didn't read the question carefully. I have loved geometry ever since I started studying it and even used it with theodolites and stuff when I did surveys for the Sea Lab experiments. I surveyed the area where the Sea Lab was located off Scripps Canyon in La Jolla, CA. Astronauts went down and stayed in the Sea Lab for a while and used my maps to find their way around. I love helping people understand geometry and would like to support you in your studies and passing exams

Microsoft Access

I have taught Access in computer classes and currently use Access (with VBA addons) in my personal programs. I graduated from DBase II to Access some 15 years ago and have bought technical books on the use of Access.
I own Microsoft Office and have a PhD. degree from Cambridge England.
Is there any more information that you need in order for you to feel comfortable in qualifying me to tutor Wyzant students in Access?
If so, please contact me.

John M., Ph.D.

Microsoft Outlook

I am and have been using Outlook for a number of years, maybe starting as far back as 1993. I am currently using Outlook 2010 and have implemented Calendar (exported to Google Calendar) and Contacts (exported to Google Contacts). I am also using Tasks. At one stage I had Outlook working with Palm Pilots but recently discontinued use of Palm Pilots. My current Outlook file is 485,535 KB.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using Microsoft PowerPoint for three years and teaching classes at three different places in Lompoc, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.

Microsoft Publisher

I have been teaching classes in Publisher 2010 for over two years and use Publisher myself to create and modify flyers for the classes. I have taught classes in computers in recovery institutions and at Regis University in Denver. I have been working with computers since 1963 and have a Ph.D degree from Cambridge University, England.

Microsoft Windows

I teach computer classes, which includes a basic computers class where I introduce beginners to the use of Windows 7.

Microsoft Word

I scored 100% on the Wyzant qualification test which is no great surprise since I have been using Word for over ten years . Recently I taught two classes in Word 2010. The class is available to people I work with on the web and so can be consulted by students I work with on the web at any time. I am very enthusiastic about supporting people who want to get manuscripts published.

Pascal

Pascal was one of my major languages I used to learn programming and I loved its simplicity. I haven't used it for a long time but with the help of a text book and compiler to remind me, I am sure I can come up to speed again rapidly. I found Pascal a lot of fun and hope you will too.

Study Skills

I have an extensive background in education and have earned a Ph.D.,M.Sc etc. I have also taught at Regents College in Denver and the University of California, San Diego. I am currently teaching Basic Computer course like Excel and Word. I have also worked with people with mental disabilities and am certified as a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner by the USPRA.

Visual Basic

I learned Kemeny Basic and Quick Basic more than 20 years ago. Then I took a course in Visual Basic about some fifteen years and have been using Visual Basic ever since. I own a Visual Basic Compiler and have at bought at least five technical books on the use of VBA in different Microsoft Applications.

Thanks
John M., Ph.D.

Writing

I have successfully written a Doctoral and Masters dissertation. As an Associate Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography,University of California,San Diego, I used to review student's graduate dissertations and help make decisions about the degrees they were awarded. I have also co-edited a publication which was published and have co-written over a hundred scientific papers One of my passions is to support people grow. A small indication of my writing abilities is that I scored 100% on the WyzAnt qualification test for being a writing tutor.
