About James

I've had vast experience in teaching and tutoring, including teaching history at a graduate level, mentoring college students, and college career prep with high school students. I've been a guest speaker at high school graduations, university assemblies, Rotary, camps, and conferences. I'll take every opportunity I can to help someone acquire knowledge and reach their goals.

I've also done a lot of publishing. I've got two books to my name and a couple dozen articles in newspapers, magazines, and journals. If you need help developing your ability to understand complex ideas and communicate effectively, I'd love to help.

I'm well versed in English literature, creative writing, editing, and publishing. I've made a small career from my own writings and can teach you how to communicate effectively and persuasively.

Tutoring can be fun! I'll help you accomplish what you want quickly and easily in an encouraging and positive way. Let me know when you want to begin!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a doctorate from Fuller Seminary and a Master's from Princeton Seminary. I have been a pastor for nearly two decades and have published books and articles related to theology and the Christian faith. I taught church history at a seminary.

Career Development

After 18 years as a non-profit manager, I have experience in all aspects of human resource management, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, alignment, compensation management, and offboarding. I've spent a good deal of those years coaching a staff of 30-60 people in career development. I've published an article in a journal on how to prepare for and succeed at interviews. I also participate in a mentoring program with college students at Azusa Pacific University, helping them discern and develop their vocational aspirations.

CBEST

I've passed the CBEST. I'm well qualified to teach a basic educational test, in that I have a Master's degree and a Doctorate. The basic requirements of English and math are well within my range of skills.

English

I'm very familiar with the world of English prose, particularly academic writing.

ESL/ESOL

I have 18 years of professional experience teaching college students and adults, and I am currently an adjunct college professor. I have been tutoring students and adults in ESL in Los Angeles, and I have formal experience with French, Spanish, Greek, and Hebrew, as well as informal experience with Japanese and Korean.

Logic

I majored in philosophy at U.C. Berkeley, and logic was one of the core competencies of the curriculum. Among my coursework was a class dedicated solely to logic and another one was dedicated to analyzing fallacies. After that I earned two more degrees. Since then I have spent 18 years as a professional orator, and logic is a key component of persuasive oratory.

Philosophy

I majored in Philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley, where I earned my B.A. While I was there, I took courses in ancient and modern philosophy, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of religion, linguistic philosophy, and philosophy of the mind. I got to sit at the feet of the now world-renowned John Searle. Later I received two more degrees in theology, which has always been a sister discipline to philosophy.

Public Speaking

I have been a pastor for nearly two decades and have given sermons, classroom lectures, and other lectures almost every week through those years. I currently speak to a congregation of 1200 attenders each week. I have been a guest speaker at Azusa Pacific University, the World Vision headquarters, Rotary, the Honolulu Art Academy, and multiple high school graduations, camps, and conferences. For my doctorate I wrote a dissertation on the subject of homiletics (preaching).

Religion

I have been a pastor for nearly two decades. I have a doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Master's from Princeton Theological Seminary. I have written two books and numerous articles on the subject of faith and theology.

Social Studies

I have a Bachelor's degree in philosophy with an emphasis in the historical development of human thought from ancient Greco-Roman society through the 20th century. I have a Master's degree which required course work in history and philosophy. I also have a doctorate. I've taught history courses at a graduate level. I'm sufficiently well-versed in the development of human society to teach social studies.

Writing

I've published two books and over twenty articles, so I'm at home in the world of English prose. I also have three degrees in higher education, so I'm used to crafting academic papers. I've helped students write college essays, grad school applications, and term papers, and I'm always open to a new project.
