About John

I have a great deal of successful experiences tutoring as well as classroom experience with ages from preschool through grade 8 in Math, Reading, English, Social Studies, Science, History, Geography, Writing, and Music teaching guitar and the recorder. I design customized curriculum for each student and work from their school texts. I am a cartoonist and illustrate small workbooks using the vocabulary words on which we have worked. I am fun and entertaining while being a very effective teacher.

Do you want your three-year-old to begin to learn to read? Do you want you second grader to excel past the second grade level? Is your child a year or two behind his or her grade level? I can, and have, been extremely successful in remedial education where I can get those that are behind up to grade level and I can assist your child to move ahead in learning levels to one or two grades above.

I have been teaching for more than 25 years in most every grade including preschool and adult education. I hold vocational credentials in food management for the restaurant industry in which I have taught classes. I also hold a substitute teaching credential for Special Education ans have worked with autistic children and emotional disturbed children.

In addition, I have worked with exceptionally advanced children working at 3 and 4 years above grade level with great success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had more than 10 years of experience working with ADD/ADHD children in classroom settings in all areas of academic and behavioral areas. In addition, I am certified in C.P.I. training to deal with behaviors. I have been trained in behavior modification and positive reinforcement and several AA techniques in educational techniques.

Autism

I have worked with autistic children in special education for 6 years in both academic and behavioral studies. I have designed specific curriculum to meet their specific needs.

Drawing

I have had many years of experience in illustrating technical manuals. I have taught Art for 4 years in a 6th grade classroom and 2 years in 7th and 8th grade classrooms. I illustrate children's stories as a teaching tool for them in learning their vocabulary words 2 or 3 times a week at this time.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have more than 25 years of classroom teaching and tutoring in grades K through 6. I have taught all academic subjects including photography, guitar, drama and elementary ASL. With young adults I have taught Braille.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for 25 years and I have been teaching for 10 years. I can teach scales, chords, basic theory and the playing of songs by tabs.

Phonics

I have taught all areas of phonics for more than 20 years. I have taught phonics in conjunction with sight-word reading to all ages including as English as a Second Language to adults and all grade levels for children. I have successfully taught children the skills to "sound out" words while learning the rules of phonic in English. I am quite familiar with the teaching of all of the rules: double vowels, silent E, consonant blends, etc.

Social Studies

I have 25 years of teaching experience in Social Studies. I have taught U.S. History to grades 4 and 8. I have taught history of Asia, the social upheaval of the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s during the Civil Rights Movement. I have taught the history of the American Revolution as well as the civil war.

Special Needs

I have worked for seven years with special education: autism, emotionally disturbed, Down syndrome children. I have experience in teaching all levels of academics as well as social skills.

Study Skills

I have taught children at levels K through 8 to learn to study effectively: have a well lit, quiet place for study, have a specific time to study, have materials available - the internet, dictionaries, etc. The most important is to learn not to be distracted.
