Hello students and family members,
I'm excited that you want to improve your English skills. This choice could be the single most important decision you will ever make for your future. I taught classroom ESL for 20 years, and loved the excitement and enthusiasm of my students. Prior to retiring in June of last year, I taught for fifteen years at the Cal Poly Pomona English Language Institute. I have also tutored many students over the years. I am interested in doing on-line tutoring or local one-on-one tutoring for students looking primarily to improve their skills in writing, and along with that goes growing a larger vocabulary. I have tutored many students attending college who needed assistance with a particular assignment or on preparation for tests. We can begin with as many or as few sessions as you would like, so please do not feel you must commit to a long-term period. I hope you will contact me soon so we can get started toward new doors opening for you in the world of English.

Shirley has been a wonderful tutor I regret not doing this sooner she has opened up a window that I thought I didn't have. With her patience and guidance I foresee a better future. Thanks to the internet I was able to find the WyzAnt company and inquire your services. Shirley is giving me my confidence back and I thank her for it. I look forward each week for my lesson.
Thank you. Your kind words are very touching. It is exciting to see you so eager to improve skills that can only make life better for you. This world could certainly be well-served to have more people like you in it.

Ms. Shirley was very patient. She corrected each mistake during the lessons.
It takes a little bit of time, but she did it pleasantly.
Shirley M. was on time, demonstrated patience, knowledgeable with a great personality and positive outlook. I would love to continue next week with our lessons.
Thank you, Jorge. I can easily say the same things about you!
Shirley is a professional teacher. She helps my son a lot. My son enjoys her class. We are lucky to meet her. Thanks Shirley.
Shirley is simply amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor for my mom. In a matter of weeks, my mom's English grammar and speaking skills have drastically improved. And the bonus is that she is picking up on American culture and idioms. I'm really proud of my mom and give all the credit to Shirley! You won't go wrong!
I found Shirley as a private tutor from WyzAnt for my friend Amy who is in the age about 30+, came from China has very limited English background and can't even say a English word, and never learned Phonics in the past. I stayed with Amy for each lesson since day one, twice a week, 1.5 hours each lesson. For only about 2 weeks, Amy learned how to spell a word by just listening from Shirley. I can't believe how fast Amy is progressing, so impressed!!
As Far I can tell, Shirley is very experienced with a lesson plan teaching Amy's from very basic Phonics and pronounce words. Amy is so happy with the progress so far.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!!
I had my first lesson with Shirley yesterday and everything went well. I feel so comfortable with her. She is very patient and explains things clearly. She is very approachable and very good teacher. Good job Shirley!
After working with Shirley for the first time I feel that she could help me pass my English class with an A.
I'm an exchange student in La Verne; and I'm really happy about my choice of choosing Shirley as my English tutor. She is a very knowledgeable & warm-heart teacher! Having taken her first class, I learned many useful American idioms and got a better understanding of American culture. Also, she corrected my grammar mistakes and pronunciation very patiently when I was speaking. The most import thing is her classes are very flexible. She uses different teaching skills and materials according to different students. I am so sure that my English speaking & writing skills will improve a lot in the next few months!
My son said he liked Shirley so much! He believed she will help him make great progress in English study.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent 3 years as a Teacher Aide in charge of small groups, teaching skills in reading, spelling, and writing to 2nd and 3rd graders. I taught five years in Kindergarten in English reading, writing, and listening comprehension. I kept detailed records on each student in the areas in need of improvement and in progress made during the academic year. I am patient, kind, and able to establish a good rapport with younger children.
During my five-year tenure at Anglo-Continental at Pitzer College, Claremont California, I taught ESL to students from Italy, Australia, Germany, Japan, China, Indonesia, and France. I worked with Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced students in grammar, writing, vocabulary, speaking, and listening skills. During the last 15 years, I have taught at Cal Poly English Language Institute, Pomona, California. I worked with beginning and intermediate students in reading, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as spelling and idioms elective classes. I received my certification in TESOL March 2011 with high honors. In addition, I have tutored community college students in test-preparation and in essay writing. With an interest in community work, I have been a volunteer Literacy tutor through the Glendora Public Library. I have always received comments from students that I am patient, kind, and clear with English instruction and help.
