Bio

I have been teaching Social Studies and English courses in Los Angeles for 42 years at the high school, community college, and university levels, including AP and Honors level History and English. I have tutored privately for 30 years.

In 1966 at age 12, a friend and I co-wrote a Man from Uncle novel. It was never published and is now lost to time, but I have been writing ever since. As a high school teacher, I edited and oversaw the student-produced magazine, Wings. I have tutored for...

In 1966 at age 12, a friend and I co-wrote a Man from Uncle novel. It was never published and is now lost to time, but I have been writing ever since. As a high school teacher, I edited and oversaw the student-produced magazine, Wings. I have tutored for all HS standardized tests. I self-published a children’s book, published a novel about teaching high school, and I have been published in an award-winning anthology about Covid 19. I have an MA in American History and teach at a major university.

I have a fondness for words, because words 'transport' us. Did you know that 'trans' means across and 'port' means carry? I'll bet you can sit here right now and think of other words that use these roots and you have just expanded your vocabulary! I excel at conversation if you are just learning English.

Other Social Studies courses I have taught include Government (including AP and Honors), Psychology, California History, & Physical and Cultural Geography.

I am a poet, essayist, and an accomplished chess player. I grew up in New England, lived in Europe, and for relaxation travel the deserts and mountains of California. I believe that reading frees us from space and time and allows us to go anywhere and do anything. If you love to learn, read. You will never be bored and you will make friends wherever you go. I encourage you to contact me if you are interested in improving your skills. Learning is the key that unlocks the doors to a brighter and better world.

Grammar

Grammar

I love grammar. Can you believe it? From diagramming sentences to finding those annoying comma splices and dangling participles, I can show you how grammar gift-wraps our language, English, in it's crazy embrace. It's not as hard to figure out as it sometimes seems, and it is what makes our language work so well under so many cicumstances and in so many conditions.

Words can transport us! Did you know that 'trans' and 'port' mean 'across' and 'carry'? I will bet that if you take two minutes right now you can think of many words that use these "roots"! In fact learning new words and roots, and improving vocabulary is one of the easiest and most exciting ways to improve our reading and writing.

English

English,

English

I taught English for 5 years at a Catholic high school and fell in love with literature and grammar (yes, I actually love grammar). I returned to college and obtained a Single Subject Credential to teach English. I am a writer and I have written and published a children's book and a novel about teaching high school, and I have been published in an award winning anthology about COVID 19. I have taught all levels of English.

Literature,

Literature

I have many years of experience teaching literature, composition, and grammar at public high schools and community colleges, and for 10 years I was the Reading and Writing Coordinator for EOP Summer Bridge at my university. Literature is really just about stories - the "stories we tell ourselves in order to live," according to Joan Didion, a famous Los Angeles writer. Reading is the foundational activity for all elements of literature. I have published a novel and a short story, and I have contributed to an award winning anthology about Covid 19.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I have been teaching SAT and many other standardized tests since 1988. Becoming successful at negotiating the SAT (or almost any standardized test) is about learning how the questions are created and presented, how wrong answers are created, and how correct answers are discerned. This is a skill and I can teach you this skill. I look forward to meeting you.

History

American History,

American History

High School & Community Collge: AP American history and government; California history, Middle East history, African history, Geography (physical and cultural), Psychology, Comparative Religion. History and current events are inseparable because understanding history lets us understand the world today, making life more interesting and exciting. History explains many events in Literature too, another area in which I have expertise. Good history relies on primary source documents including letters, journals, news, diaries, and other fascinating sources of first-hand information.
Geography,

Geography

I have taught American and California geography (physical and cultural). Geography is essential for understanding the history and the environment of the lands in which we live and will help us understand climate change and the environmental crisis. Ecology is an essential component of both physical and cultural geography, therefore, geography helps us understand the world today, whether it is the war in Ukraine or the water crisis in California or the Middle East.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

Although we don't often think about it, government and the politics which characterize it are somewhat like the stormclouds presented to us in the daily news cycle. The scandals, outrages, and stunning victories paraded before us online and on TV occur because of the way the politics of government are set up behind the scenes. We can unveil the many types of government (autocracies, democracies and so forth) found on our planet, and the corresponding rules and protocols which affect the lives of real people every day in America, Russia, China, Zimbabwe or any place where people are gathered together to make a society. Politics make the world spin, and understanding the way government and politics work helps us understand the real world in which we live.
Religion,

Religion

I have taught Middle Eastern History at a private Jewish school where we examined the distinctions among the three great monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I do not subscribe to a religion, and I believe this allows me to approach the subject with an open mind. I have also taught as part of World History courses the same units on monotheism; also, units on Buddhism and Taoism and it's various forms and types. Most people in the world subscribe to a religion and to understand this spiritual dimension of our humanity is an essential part of being a fully realized human being.
World History

World History

I have taught World History for longer than any other course. We cover each continent systematically and thoroughly by examining social, political, individual, cultural and economic trends and patterns throughout history. World History happens around us every day; even as I write these words, wars and conflicts, trade agreements and migrations are presented to us daily on the news, online, on TV, in magazines and books, and many of us are literally living though these events. It is exciting because understanding history lets us understand the world today, making our life more interesting and exciting, and it is always better to understand than to be afraid.

Chess

Chess

Rating is about 1900. I taught a Beginners chess class at Glendale Community College for two years: Introduction to Chess. I coached a middle and high school chess club for 7 years; our team was never defeated, we had one tie. I have played in a few tournaments; I play speed chess often (chess is my hobby), and I play online at itsyourturn, redhotpawn, and chess.com.
