About Crystal

I have been an educator for the last 26 years… “gasp”…how is that possible? Well the first class I taught was to a diverse group of students hailing from the Kingdom of Caring, BabyLand General in Cleveland, Strawberryland, and Toontown. They were a quiet group, but we worked diligently on reading and writing strategies, and everyone received happy face stickers. My pedagogy at the time consisted mostly of writing gibberish on a tiny blackboard and making believe I knew how to read perfectly during story time - granted I was five. Since then, my pedagogy has evolved and has been influenced by my travels, theater background, and previous careers working in finance and marketing.

Prior to relocating to California in February, I accomplished a life-long dream of stepping foot on seven continents in seven years. My travel experiences have turned me into a life-long learner and adventure-seeker. My exposure to various languages and cultures has given me insight into students’ diverse backgrounds and taught me strategies for shaping meaningful educational experiences. I envision my future classroom as a place where there is a climate of respect and appreciation for cultural and linguistic differences.

My recent experience includes teaching English abroad in India and working with inmates at Garner Correctional Facility in Newtown, Connecticut, where I created collaborative theater projects that promoted leadership and communication skills. I have also taught SAT prep classes to high school students and served as a substitute teacher for the Newburgh, New York school district. In addition, I recently completed my Master's Degree in Second Language Education (TESOL) and worked as a student teacher at two very unique schools located in New York. I was lucky to work side by side and learn from incredible teachers while educating brilliant minds.

I strive to make learning fun, and my top priority is to engage students’ interests, cultural backgrounds, and beliefs, which promote invested participation in the learning process. I love bringing creativity into the classroom, adapting materials so they make sense, crafting instruction to meet specific needs, and making learning relevant to the context of my students’ lives - and I promise not to be stingy with the smiley face stickers!

I am a certified English as a Second Language teacher who is also qualified to teach strategies for mastering the TOEFL exam, reading, writing, and vocabulary.

I am bi-lingual and I love teaching Spanish to young children who are at an optimal age to master a second language.
