About Carla

For the love of learning! I will go forth.

Hello! I am Carla. My tutoring specializations are in Writing, English, Reading, Literature, and Proofreading. I am also hoping to tutor in film and theatre.

For each of you, I first want to know what your goals are, whether it is help writing a report or term paper, improving your reading skills, or help understanding a work of literature, or more. Then, based off of your learning style I will find the best way to get you to that goal.

I worked at the YMCA in their After School and Summer programs for two and a half years. Making sure the students got their homework finished was of the utmost importance. We sat down with a student at a time and they brought us the homework they were having trouble with. First, the articulated what they're supposed to do for the homework and what was causing them concern, then we explained it to them in a way they understood. We continued to work at the problem until the student fully grasped the assignment.

I also was a volunteer teaching assistant for ESL classes at The Ohio State University. In those classes international students came to learn about how the English language in the United States is used in cultural context. The international students in these classes already had an intermediate understanding of the English language. The teacher would make up the lesson, the we the assistants, would split into smaller groups, and facilitate the discussions from those lessons. We would answer any questions about language and culture the students had throughout the discussions, but we also had specific time set aside for them to ask questions.

My adult education journey started at The Ohio State University, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Travel Writing and minoring in Studio Art. The Travel Writing major I created through the Personalized Study Program.

After undergraduate college I was a freelance journalist for about five years. During that time I was also working at the YMCA and volunteering in the ESL classes.

I am always seeking to learn new things. I love being challenged. As much as I loved journalism, my focus shifted when I started taking theatre and filmmaking classes at a community college. I was so impassioned that I applied to graduate school in acting. Recently I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts in Acting for Film.

Yes, I want to get into the film and television industry. But teaching is something I also want to do. Learning is not just something I love, I also love to educate others. I believe that knowledge is empowering, and I want to build others up.

I've been writing stories since before I could actually spell my name. Not only do I have a degree in writing, I also have five years' experience as a journalist. I've had a few hundred articles published and that's no exaggeration. But, most importantly, at least to me, is writing is a passion of mine.
For the love of learning! I will go forth.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I started drawing as a small child. It came naturally to me because I come from a family of artists. My undergraduate degree includes a minor in studio art, including drawing. Throughout the years my art has been used for various works, including being published as advertisements in brochures and newspapers.

Most recently I have earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting for Film, which included a thorough knowledge of as the history of film, and of course hands on experience of how it works, in front of and behind the camera. Before that, I was also studied theatre, the predecessor of film, for two years at a community college. While studying theatre, we also were taught about film as well, especially the effect both have on each other, and their differences. Then, I'd say, I've always had a love and appreciation for film which I sought to educate myself with through documentaries, books, and behind the scenes interviews.

I began painting when I was small child. It came naturally to me - I come from a family of artists. My undergraduate degree included a minor in studio art, including painting. Over the years my painting skills have been used professionally for theatrical set designs, and murals. Not to mention paintings and drawings as gifts for others, and for my own leisure.

Public Speaking

My first experience public speaking as an adult was when I was involved in the After School and Summer programs with the YMCA. In these programs we organized group activities, during which we had to maintain the attention of the children and have them follow directions.
My most recent experience in public speaking has been as an actor. I started off in theatre classes, then performed in full length plays in front of audiences of a couple hundred at local theatres. Within the last year and a half I've also been able to add to my experiences, acting in front of the camera, and crew for that matter.

I studied theatre for two years at a community college, taking classes from theatre history, to script analysis, to acting. During that time I also performed in full-length plays at local theatres, as an actor and in off-stage roles such as costume designer. I continued my theatrical education at the New York Film Academy in Burbank. There, I learned how theatre contrasted with film, including writing a 30 minute stage play as a class and performing at a local theatre.

My Bachelor's Degree is in Travel Writing. I also have been a freelance journalist and have had a a couple hundred articles published. Most recently I've written a few short screenplays. Academically, I've written my fair share of thesis papers.
