I love teaching! I have spent most of my life dedicated to helping children strive for educational excellence. I specialize in teaching reading, spelling and writing, primarily because I love these subjects, but also because they are the pathway to knowledge in all subjects.
I began my teaching career with pre-kindergarten, for Burbank Unified School District, where I set up a developmental learning environment that was fun, playful and engaging each day. Then I became a mom of three and stayed home for several years to raise and teach my own children. When I discovered my middle son struggled with dyslexia, I set out to discover how to teach him. I studied with a private school, who trained me in Orton-Gillingham based intervention, and I have been teaching children this strategy since. I decided to return to school and finished my BA in Child Development, and I am currently working towards my teaching credential and Master's degree in Special Education.
I goal is to create awareness of children who are high risk for reading difficulties and create an environment within the school and outside the school where any child can learn.
I have spent the last 8 years tutoring children in reading. I currently work for Burbank Unified School District as a Behavior Interventionist, where I am able to incorporate some of my abilities in teaching reading skills.
I used a specific program that is Orton-Gillingham based, which simply means multi-sensory. My system has a colored tile set of the phonemic alphabet, and includes prefixes, suffixes, units(ing, ung, ink) silent e unit (ite, ate, ive), digraphs, vowel teams and more.
The program is broken up into parts. Each lesson includes a teaching component with the tiles by the tutor, which is interactive with the student, then moves into phrases, sentences, reading, and review of the lesson. Each lesson is built to support the next lesson, ensuring that the student has a solid foundation of phonemic awareness which is required to ensure a strong ability to learning to read.
I would love to visit with you on how to help your child become an amazing reader. The result of strong reading also leads to an empowerment of self-esteem and confidence, which every child should be able to experience. I love teaching! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
