About Leann

Tutoring you in English, whether it is in writing, grammar, literature, or vocabulary, is very rewarding to me. I want to share my enthusiasm for English with you. I have a Master's degree in English, specializing in composition (writing) and American literature, particularly African American and Latino/Latina literature. I have been a tutor at both the college level and high school level since 1994, and I have also taught English. I have worked with a wide range of students at many different proficiency levels. For example, I have tutored advanced placement and Honors level students as well as remedial level students and non-native speakers on English. I have learned from my students, that each one has the ability to become proficient in English grammar and syntax, to understand literature and become stronger readers, and to be able to express themselves through writing.

I understand that English can be very daunting and also boring to students. It's a course everyone has to take, and if we didn't have to take it, many of us wouldn't do so. Oftentimes, we are reluctant and have negative feelings about writing for school; while we may love to write in journals, on blogs, on social media, and creatively, we dread those research papers, compositions, or any type of writing we may be graded on. If you're like me, I always waited until the last minute to write papers. I was also afraid of getting bad marks on my papers. It doesn't have to be like that. As your tutor, I will help you develop a writing process that works for you. I will show you how to get ideas down on paper, to brainstorm and write rough drafts like real writers do. I will help you with proofreading and editing and help you focus on your needs -- whether it be comma usage or subject/verb agreement, I will assist you in understanding the rules of grammar and how to apply them in your assignments.

I enjoy to read, so if you have a reading assignment, I will read with you, so we can talk about the literature together. You will have the opportunity to share what you like or don't like about the reading and why. My style of tutoring treats you as an equal reader so there is no shame if you don't understand something. I want, as a tutor, to also learn from you since we're both part of a community of active learners. I'm not going to lecture you but talk with you and work with you, so you can have an enjoyable experience and get excited about English, writing, literature, and your work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I tutored in a Community Outreach Literacy Program in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I helped students prepare to take the GED Exam. I was also a classroom tutor in English at Sands Montessori Elementary School in Cincinnati, helping students to improve their grades and attain proficiency in English. I additionally worked with non-native speakers of English on proficiency in the subject.

Writing

I have been the assistant editor of an academic journal, "Open Words" for 10 years. As a staff member, I review, edit, and proofread articles submitted by university professors in the English field. Working in college writing centers, I have worked with graduate students on projects that include presentations, theses, and dissertations. I have also done classroom presentations on APA, MLA, and Chicago style forms of documentation.
