I have always been an avid reader and prolific writer, but it was not until I moved to California and began working in childcare to supplement my writing income that I discovered my love for teaching. I had often helped friends in school with reading and writing, but never had I formalized my teaching or tutoring skills in a monetized way. However, since coming to California, I have worked with students of various ages, helping a five-year-old practice her writing, and a 50-year-old learn to read. I work with children ages 8-14 at an afterschool program, where help with vocabulary and reading comprehension is frequently requested. Having worked with such a wide range of students, I have learned to adjust my teaching style to suit their needs, and I am confident that I can tutor any age or skill level in English, reading, and writing.
In 2009 I graduated with honors from Duke University, where I majored in English and Theater, and I have been working as a writer, admissions essay editor, and screenplay consultant since then. I have ample experience working with people to improve their writing skills, and I am eager to continue helping people with their language skills across the board. I like to let students define their own methods of learning, because different techniques work better for different people. While working with a new student, I figure out their strengths and weaknesses, and work with them to formulate a path to success. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having worked with kids and independently researched to discover optimal study strategies, I am qualified to teach this subject. I know not only memorization techniques but also study schedules that effectively help students best recall and retain information in any subject. I am also adept at using creative tools to help students who are struggling in a particular area or with a specific concept. I have been involved in theatre in some respect since high school, when I was in the drama club. I worked as a stage manager in college, and took several acting and playwriting classes. I have also taken improv comedy classes since college, and I continue to be an active writer and performer. I was hired as a theatre tutor for a toddler, where I worked with puppets and props to help the child form storytelling techniques and learn creatively. I have also worked as a script consultant, helping writers improve their screenplays and stageplays for four years.
