Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Having received a B.S. in Art Education from the University of Michigan I am confident and capable of helping college students with a variety of issues including study habits, approach to tests, organization and comprehension of material and writing papers. As a 20+ year private instructor I also possess the knowledge, temperament and social skills to work comfortably one-on-one with individual students.

Composition (Music)

As an active live performer of popular music and private music instructor for over 20 years I have been required to extensively study and understand music composition and song structure. I have personally developed and curriculum method of teaching this subject utilizing various popular songs from the past 50 years as sample material to engage the student into learning composition conventions. I then move the student forward by having them create a piece of music and/or song of their own.

Drawing has been one of the most exciting and enjoyable parts of my life. Since I was able to hold a pencil in my left hand I was intrigued and challenged to be able to put on paper what I saw with my eyes. I have pursued this career over the years in school and college and ultimately received my B.S. In Art Education from the University of Michigan with my major art major being in painting. I have a real love for realism and I am experienced and confident that I can relate the necessary essentials of drawing including composition, line, shade, form, one and two point perspective, facial drawing, figure drawing and knowledge of drawing material. I have instructed all ages from preschool to teenagers and enjoy relating the techniques of this wonderful talent and drive to draw.

General Music

I have extensive knowledge and experience in music theory from 20+ years of private music instruction and 25+ years of popular music performance at the professional level. My B.S. in Art Education from the University of Michigan allows me the discipline to teach music theory and practice on a number of instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, piano and keyboard, ukelele, harmonica and basic drums.

The guitar has been a lifelong passion and hard-earned joy of mine since age 12. After a few years of taking private guitar lessons by the age of 19 I was taking on private students of my own as I strove to become a professional working musician and recording artist. As I continued my quest and privately studied many genres and styles of guitar I developed my own guitar instruction method which I publish exclusively to my students as we progress. I can quickly and effectively teach you all aspects of playing all guitar types including acoustic, electric, bass guitar and ukelele and in all the majors genres including Rock, Blues, Country, Pop and Instrumentals.

I teach all the elements of guitar playing such as chords, scales, tablature, soloing, tuning, strumming, finger picking, and melody arrangement. My method is a Gestalt style approach with an emphasis on music theory and song structure which enables the guitar player to actually perform songs and/or write their own material. I weekly teach one-on-one lessons on guitar to a variety of all ages and have a proved track record of successful students over the years. I also have performed regularly for 28+ years as a guitar player with experience in all the modern genres and have written, produced and performed 5 CD releases as a solo recording artist. If you need more knowledge and technique on this exciting instrument, I can help.

Painting has always been an integral part of the artistic experience since I was a teenager and ultimately became my art school major towards my degree in Art Education from the University of Michigan. Although abstract and conceptual design painting were always popular, it was realism that did it for me. Being able to capture what the eye sees and accurately reproduce it on canvas has always fascinated me, so much so, that I studied for years various natural subject matter such as waves on the beach, colorful sunsets, animals and configurations of trees. Through this intense study I am able to instructor others in the conventions of painting and the use of color theory to productively recreate images as well as make realistic imaginary scenes. I have displayed my paintings in gallery showings and have sold many of my pieces to art lovers of all kinds.

My background in songwriting has been acquired by a lifelong pursuit of what I would consider to be one of the most fruitful endeavors in life. Since I was 12 years old, when I began playing the guitar I have been composing music and lyrics and have honed the ability to craft a song from almost any subject and in almost any genre including Pop, Rock, Blues, Country and Instrumentals. I have written many songs over my career and recently I have written, performed, and produced my 5th CD project since 1998 which includes 12 songs of the 34 I have published since that time. These songs have had positive acclaim and have been featured on various radio programs and television. I have also worked for years as a hired freelance composer of other clients music with much success. I have also performed live as a solo “one-man-band for over 28 years playing popular songs from all genres. Armed with my guitar and a working knowledge of the keyboard I can effectively show you how to craft and develop a song that fits the modern trends and is consistent with music theory. What kind of life would we have without song...?

Voice (Music)

Singing has always been a passionate endeavor since I started studying and enjoying music at age 12. Not being a so-called “natural” at singing I decided that in order to improve I must work hard and gradually improved my skills and matured into a professional and consistently working musician and recording artist. Over the many years of live and studio vocal performance I have developed the various techniques to expand a vocal range and quality. I have found that vocalizing involves the person as a whole and that with the proper mindset and lessons nearly anyone who can speak can enjoy singing.

Utilizing ear training, correct vowel phonics, breathing, diction, and appropriate song material a person can achieve a quality sound that they and others can enjoy. Since I have a vast knowledge and experience with modern, popular song, I can help the novice or more serious singer learn and improve their abilities and be able to perform in any venue.
