Bio

Although I followed my love for chemistry to complete a B.A. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I discovered programming in my 4th and 5th years at UCSC and found a way to turn my degree into a job testing software used for chemical analysis. From there I took additional classes at San Jose State University to move into a programming position. I have been a programmer ever since. I currently work for my own company writing software for web, iOS and Android.

I started teaching by becoming an instructor at my Taekwondo studio (I am a 2nd degree black belt) and this is were I learned that I love teaching kids! I'm hoping to share my love and understanding of the things I love to do by being a tutor.

Ever since I was a kid I have been able to "see" molecules! I have a deep understanding of the mechanics of life and love to talk about it and teach it - and this is why this is what I studied in college.

I have been a software engineer for over 25 years. I have been a tester, designer and coder and have intimate knowledge of every aspect of software engineering. I know C, C++, Objective-C, Java and am familiar with many other scripting languages and environments. I'm currently a full-stack engineer for my own company coding for the web, iOS and Android.

I am currently in my 3rd semester of music studies at Gavilan College and I'm feeling like it's time to share my love for music by helping people with music theory and music history.

My students will find that I am energetic, enthusiastic, patient and funny. At the same time I'm a busy person and expect my students to respect our time by "getting to it" when we meet and completing things I ask them to do before our next meeting. Please contact me if you have any further questions about my approach to different subjects or my schedule.

Subjects

Computer

C,

C

I have taken several classes in the C programming language. For 10 years I maintained software for a Palm Pilot application that was written in C, and I have solved many high level and low level problems using C.
C++,

C++

I have taken many classes that use C++ as the languages. For 10 years as a consultant, most work was done in C++. I have read a few very important books (Effective C++, More Effective C++) that changed my programming life.

I have been a software engineer/designer for 25 years. I know C, C++, Objective-C, Java and have familiarity with other scripting languages. I'm currently a "full-stack" developer for my own company, JIBASoft, Inc., writing software for the web, iOS and Android. My strengths are in analysis and design and "guts" - the code underneath the UI that does all the work.

Java

Java

I have taken several courses and read many more books for java over my 25+ year career as a software engineer. As it happened, I never really did Java as part of a job (C, C++, C# mostly), until I started maintaining my company's website a few years ago. Since then, I've been writing java every day for the past 3 years. I have seen and solved a lot of problems - and my experience boils down to a few key points that I will share with my students.

History

Music History

Music History

I am currently in my 3rd semester of Music study at Gavilan College. I have read extensive amounts of extra material before, during and after my Mus IA - History of Western Music (Early to Classical) and Mus 2 - History of Rock and Jazz classes, receiving an A in both. I have also completed 2 semesters of Music Theory (Mus 3A, 3B) with A's. I am currently taking Music Theory (Mus 3A) and Mus 1B - History of Western Music (Romantic to Current Era). I have already read The History of Western Music by Burkholder, Grout and Palisca and am reading it a 2nd time as a supplemental text for my classes. Speak to my Professor, Dahveed Behroozi at Gavilan College in Gilroy, CA about my proficiency.

- I have a B.A. in Chemistry and Molecular Biology from UCSC (1989). - Although I turned my first job as chemist into a job as a software engineer, I have always kept my mind in the world of chemistry/biology by daily reading articles. - Last year I refreshed biology to tutor a student in AP Biology by reading AP Biology Textbooks.

Sports/Recreation

Golf,

Golf

I self-taught myself to a 9 handicap in a few years. I have read extensively about swing mechanics and applied much of what I learned to get to that 9 handicap. My approach to teaching golf is to not try to fix too much, but to be cognizant of the few really important positions in the swing that are common in all good ball strikers: Setup, take-away, top, impact, follow-through.
Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I am a 2nd degree blackbelt in Taekwondo. I received both my black belts from Master Chae Song Mun at America Taekwondo Center in Morgan Hill, CA. I volunteered for over 3 years as one of the principal instructors of the school, putting in 100s of hours of instruction in that time. I have been certified as a CUTA/USAT referee for state-level sparring competitions and basic forms.
