About Paul

I have a love of literature, art, and history. My favorite author is John Milton and most of the Late Romantics (Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, etc.). My major GPA was 3.47 at UCLA which features a rigorous program in English literature. I'm also a writer, so my ability to communicate in written form is very strong and I am currently enrolled in the MFA Program in Screenwriting at UCLA. I'm a sought-after speaker within the Community Programs Office at UCLA for my motivational talks on good study habits, staying focused to graduate, and student self-advocacy. My favorite activity is teaching elementary school students the art of filmmaking through a voluntary after-school program.

I've tutored students ranging in age from twelve to twenty one and I've been doing it for over ten years. Although my specialty is English and English literature, I have an extensive background in general American history and world histories as well as a minor in Film.

My approach to teaching is based on the Socratic method of critical thinking and questioning. I believe the most important question a student can ask is, "Why?" I believe in this method because I have used it effectively to help students become better writers and critical thinkers. This method is best applied to students with long-term goals in mind -- goals that may take a year or more to prepare for. I also have certain short-cut techniques, but I reserve those for students in dire need of immediate aid.

When all is said and done, I'm simply here to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I prepared and gave talks on various biblical subjects on a weekly basis when I was a youth pastor. I would also give in-depth bible studies to small-group teachers on a weekly basis. I was mostly educated by my father, a career seminarian and professor of Church history but I was also taught by seminarians from Talbot and Westminster seminaries when I worked under them in various youth ministries.

English

Graduated UCLA with a degree in English and a minor in Film.

Helped UCLA students become better writers as a counselor for the Writing Success Program.

Been tutoring students off-and-on for the past ten years.
