University of Kansas (Political Science)
I have always found tutoring to be a very enriching way to earn a living. I started in college when I worked for the AmericaReads program at Kansas University. We went to local grade schools and searched out students who were behind, or ahead, and sought to catch them up or encourage them to read more challenging books. Soon after, I was hired at a boys group home. I was a tutor, basketball coach, life-skills coach, cook, disciplinarian, or anything else I needed to help them with to move past what got them there. I transferred from KU to the University of Utah to advance my study of the Persian language. I soon was working at a drug rehabilitation center which housed parents and their children. I was working with adults and children who had gone through some really difficult times. All together, I have worked with kids for four years and really enjoy seeing progress and comprehension.
During these four years I was earning a B.G.S. in Political Science. I studied Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Farsi, as well as Constitutional, Federal, and International Law. I studied Anthropology, World and US History. Research and analysis of any subject that relates to the political arena and composition of that information is something that I would consider myself an expert on. I am very familiar with the subject of Government, how it works, who are the players, and what theories are used to explain patterns.
My tutoring method is based upon : Show, Tell, Do
I first show the student an example of what they need to do. I ask them to tell me in their own words what I have shown them. I ask them to carry out what is to be done so that it can be discussed. As all subject and needs are different, this method is not set in stone. I have always found tutoring to be a very enriching way to earn a living. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have played basketball almost my entire life. I coached for the GABL in Kansas and took my team to second place in the league, our first year there.
I hold a B.G.S. in political science from the University of Utah. I graduated with a 3.3 GPA. I tutored for a federal program called America Reads while in school. I carried a 3.7 GPA in political science classes.
As a Teach For America tutor, I was trained to work with kids to improve reading. I am an avid reader and have the background to find target areas and assess how to improve.
