About Kristina

Hello,

I have been working with children and college students for about 4 years in total. Being a student myself, I understand the value of having someone there to help you who can give you their undivided attention that teachers often can't provide. I worked as a speech and debate coach for Irvine Valley College and am getting my BA in Communication Studies at California State University, Long Beach, which is why I feel I am qualified to help students with most kinds of presentations at both the construction (written) level and the delivery level. This has also made me a good writer which is why I also excel in that area.

For younger children, I can teach a wider variety of subjects, but my primary focus would be reading and writing. I have worked with chosen ages 5-13 in these areas.

Because of my three years competing and one year coaching the speech and debate team, I have have spent countless hours reading, writing, editing and of course, speaking. Joining the speech and debate team has been an incredibly rewarding experience and not just because of the shiny pieces of plastic I have won over the years. The most important thing I have received from my experience is the confidence in my own writing and speaking abilities which I have found to be increasingly rare in people around me as I get older. I have very much enjoyed helping my own students to excel in communication competence to help them better themselves and improve the outlook of their future careers.

Never be afraid to ask for help. Take it from someone who used to never follow the advice and fell behind because of it.

To become more familiar with my schedule, please contact me through this site. You may also contact me for other miscellaneous details pertaining to my qualifications, experience and cats.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I attended Troy High School from 2010 until 2014. Troy is highly demanding as it is a magnet school, so there were a few student run tutoring programs where we could help each other with classes or to prepare for state exams such as the SATs, ACTs & the CAHSEE. I was apart of this program and helped students with their language arts classes as well as ACT test prep. My favorite students were the ESL students because they tried the hardest and were the most excited with their positive results.

ACT Reading

When I was a high school student at Troy High School, I was apart of a student-run tutoring program for the ACT. It was completely free and students would meet during lunch or after school on campus to help each other in the subject(s) they were struggling. We were often paired with people who were good at the subject we struggled and vice versa. I was struggling with ACT math at the time, so I was tutored by an ESL student who was a math whizz. In return, I tutored him in ACT English and Reading.

English

I have spent time working with my local church preschool with children ages 2-5. It is part of our responsibility to teach the children the basics such as letters and numbers and eventually how to read. We would do this using bible stories or fun activities to keep the children engaged. As I am a communications major, I would say that English and Communication are the most closely related degrees. Both involve the use of the English language, of course, but beyond that they both involve coding and decoding messages that people send to one another either through the written word or one's voice.

Grammar

As a debate coach for the IVC team, I spend much of my time proofreading the speech scripts of competitors and making corrections as needed. They send me the script in its preliminary stages and then after editing it on my own, I bring it to them and point out their errors so they do not make the same mistake in their next speech.
In order to have credibility as a speaker, it is incredibly important to have impeccable grammar. Since competitors want to win, they (& their coaches) are not willing to have them lose because their judge is an English Major and didn't like their speech because of grammar errors. This is why I am very strict when it comes to the grammar in the speeches of my students.

Proofreading

As a debate coach for the IVC team, I spend much of my time proofreading the speech scripts of competitors and making corrections as needed. They send me the script in its preliminary stages and then after editing it on my own, I bring it to them and point out their errors so they do not make the same mistake in their next speech.
Proofreading is not just for finding grammar and spelling errors but also involves editing content and even the structure of the written work. Seeing as I do this for 9 months of the year, I feel I am qualified to do this.

Public Speaking

I competed for the Irvine Valley Speech and Debate team for three years and have been a coach for the team this past year. I have also been a TA for the Argumentation and Debate class at IVC for the head of the communication department. I have helped students to write speeches in either an informative or persuasive manner and have taught them how to present those speeches with little notes or even memorized. I have also taught them how to research properly so that they may have proper support for their claims in their speeches. Lastly, I have taught them how to deliver speeches to large and small audiences. I have taught in front of the entire class as well as the debate team which has between 20 and 30 members and have also worked with students individually and in small groups for tutoring and coaching appointments.

Reading

I have worked for several years at my church with children ages 2-6. Part of our job was to teach preschool, so we often taught the younger children the alphabet and numbers. Also, some of reading-age children were in the process of learning to read and through the use of bible stories, me and the other caretakers taught them to read.
As for older children, I spent several Summer's during my summers helping children with "Over the Summer" book reports.

Vocabulary

When doing research for the debate team, I run across a lot of vocabulary I do not know. I will be reading anything from a piece of legislation to be passed by the federal government to an economic paper or medical journal. My students as well often have trouble with some of the political jargon used by policymakers, so more often than not I find myself explaining concepts and defining certain words in articles they are assigned so they can use those words adequately in a debate round.
For my speech writers, good vocabulary is even more important. Vocabulary is a form of persuasion as a good vocabulary implies intelligence and knowledge of the topic whereas a bad vocabulary creates the perception that the speaker is uneducated. Often when I am editing the speeches of my students, I try and lift their vocabulary to a higher level that is more appropriate for their predicted audience.

Voice (Music)

I did musical theater from age five until age 13. Afterward, I performed in a choir from age 13 until I graduated high school at 18. I was the section leader in my high school choir from sophomore year until my senior year which required me to teach music to my classmates. I have taken numerous vocal training courses in college that have made me a proficient musician. I am able to read sheet music.

Writing

As a coach for the IVC speech and debate team, I have to help competitors write scripts for their speeches that are adequately organized and properly present the subject at hand. Since I also competed in this activity for three years myself, I have written many speeches for competition.
I have also completed all my Writing classes for my undergraduate degree and am adept in both research-based writing and literary writings.
