Ever feel like you aren't learning in your classes? Like what your teacher is explaining just isn't clicking with you? That maybe, just maybe, you could enjoy the subject if your teacher taught a little more interestingly, or a little more to your learning style?
I have learned from firsthand experience how difficult it is for a full-time teacher to come in and teach all of his or her students in a way that is helpful for their learning style. They have too much to worry about, dealing with multiple classes of twenty to thirty students (sometimes more) every day. That's where I come in. As a one-on-one tutor, I can speak specifically to your needs and learning style in order to help you grasp the subject that much more easily. I love the feeling when a student finally understands a difficult concept, and work toward that realization in every lesson.
When I tutor, my intent is to help you learn how to solve the problems, analyze the text, explain the concepts, or whatever else may be needed, rather than just giving you the answer. If necessary, I will guide you step-by-step through the process, but I try to help you think on your own and to recognize correct ways to answer problems, write papers, or otherwise do excellent work.
Some qualifications and background details, for the curious: in middle school, I participated in math competitions, primarily MathCounts, in which I was first place in the state of California in 8th grade. A few years later, I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in 10th grade. I also took AP Physics B and AP Physics C: Mechanics (Calculus-based) during my senior year of high school, scoring a 5 on each of them.
In 9th grade, I took the old SAT and scored 1580, with an 800 on the Verbal section and a 780 on the Math section. As a senior in high school, I took the new SAT and scored 2330, with scores of 780 in Math, 780 in Verbal, and 770 in Writing. I'm also a graduate of the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Humanities, emphasis in English. I have taught Pre-Calculus, Physics, and Geometry for Biola Youth Academics, and hope someday to be a published fiction writer. (I also sing with a choir and go swing/blues dancing multiple nights a week!) Ever feel like you aren't learning in your classes? Like what your teacher is explaining just isn't clicking with you? My son's test scores went from D's to B's after only 2 sessions. Nathan is a very patient and effective tutor. I would definitely not hesitate to use him again in the future.
Nathan reviewed waves, motion, and properties of waves. My daughter was able to better understand her homework and the concepts they covered.
Very responsive. Getting my son prepped for AP Physics exam. Always prepared and very prompt. Nathan is very patient with my son but doesn't coddle him. Very good tutor. THANKS.
Nathan W. was a very helpful and knowledgeable tutor who really helped me understand my subject. He is patient and very effective!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I first took Calculus in my freshman year of high school, and scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in 10th grade. I've been tutoring Calculus ever since I graduated high school. Perhaps the best example of my experience here is when I helped one student get his yearly grade from an F to a B from the end of one semester to the end of the next.
I graduated from Biola University with a degree in the Humanities, emphasis in English, and my ultimate career aspiration is to be a creative writer. I've had years of experience writing both creatively and academically, and also analyzing texts from all parts of history and many different cultures, from ancient Greece to modern America, England, and Russia.
I also scored a perfect 800 on the old SAT's Verbal section, and a 770 on the new SAT's Writing section, demonstrating my skills in both categories.
I took AP Physics for the first time in 8th grade, as a student of the only middle school in the country to offer the course, at least at the time. I retook it on my own as a senior in high school in order to get college credit for the AP, scoring a 5 on both the AP Physics B and AP Physics C: Mechanics exams. I've tutored Physics (high school, AP, and college) since 2009.
I have had experience with the SAT going back to 7th grade with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, where I scored a 1270 (650 on Math). I took it the next two years as well, scoring a 1580 on the old SAT in 9th grade with a 780 in Math. I've also tutored all the levels of math that the SAT covers and beyond over the past five years, both through WyzAnt and outside.
