California State University Fresno (Linguistics)
My specialty is teaching English as a Second Language. I have worked in both private schools and California Adult Schools. I'm particularly interested in helping students adjust to life in the United States by helping empower them to use English for their own communicative needs. This can be as simple as a visit to the grocery store or as involved as preparing them to take an American University class.
I work with all ages and backgrounds. I have worked with Mexican immigrants with an elementary school education, businessmen from Brazil and teenagers from foreign countries. I became interested in English as a Second Language teaching from traveling a lot as a child. Different cultures and customs interest me and I sometimes use this as a focus for conversation practice.
I encourage students to express their views on different subjects and help them develop these views into writing. I believe that speaking skills come before writing and that is important for students to be able to respond to what they are studying in manner that is personally important to them.
I am sensitive to a second language speaker's needs having lived in a foreign country as a young adult. I understand the need to meet the challenges of speaking and writing a second language. This is essential to function independently in the country desired. My English language skills are excellent and adaptable to any level. I can teach grammar in a way that matters to the needs of an English as a Second Language student. I work with vocabulary to motivate the student and challenge them while making it enjoyable.
I can teach the student to rapidly sum up what they read with techniques for remembering what they have read. In writing I encourage the student to write first to get out their message while talking about corrections afterwards with them.
I am available in the weekday mornings to work with students who have specific projects on which you would like to work. I can also contact the library for materials should you not have their own work to do, after finding out your level. Please contact me if you would like my help. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have several years working in a private school as well as experience working in a adult public education.
