About Michael

For more than fifteen years, I practiced law in New York City. Perhaps the most important role I played for my clients was that of an advisor, educating them how the law applied to particular factual situations. Taking abstract legal concepts, and breaking them down into terms understandable to a layperson was critical to my practice. In addition, explaining complicated factual situations to judges in court, under the pressures of oral arguments, allowed me to further develop my skills in communicating difficult concepts more simply.

I believe these skills have helped me become an effective instructor.

In 2016, I began teaching at Fresno State University. I have taught Evidence as well as Business Law and am scheduled to teach those courses as well as Criminal Law in the fall. I have found that the teaching skills I learned as an attorney have translated well to the classroom.

In the classroom, and in tutoring, I believe the best way to present material is one which allows students to think through a problem with my assistance, determine the answer themselves and therefore better understand that answer. In my opinion this is much better than me simply telling students the answer. I also firmly believe that understanding the underlying concepts makes the specifics much easier. I work to be very patient, and not move on to the next topic until the first one is fully understood.

If this approach appeals to you, and you think you could benefit from working through problems to understand the solution, with my assistance, please feel free to contact me. I would very much like to assist any student who feels like working together would be beneficial.

Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I am an attorney admitted in New Jersey and New York. I, thankfully, passed the Bar Exam in each state on the first attempt. I practiced law for more than fifteen years, and am now teaching undergraduate courses in law at Fresno State University.

Law

I received a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 1998, and am admitted to the Bar in the States of New York and New Jersey. I practiced law in New York City for more than fifteen years, six of them as a solo practitioner.

I am currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Fresno State University, teaching law courses at the undergraduate level.

Political Science

I have a law degree from New York University, as well as an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of California at Davis. My practice as an attorney allowed me to see how government, at least the judicial branch in New York State, really functions.

I began teaching at Fresno State University just last semester, teaching one class of business law. Thirty-four students took part in evaluating me and in response to the prompt "Overall, I rate this instructor as an excellent teacher", twenty-one students rated me at five, and eight rated me at four, on a scale from one to five.

Amazing tutor!

Michael Y. has helped me with my legal research class. So far, he has helped me three times and each time it is a great experience. He is an easy guy to talk to and I get a clear understanding of what he is teaching me. I have also gained knowledge and confidence in my class thanks to him. I will continue to go to him for help. I do recommend him to anyone studying law.
