Cal State Bakersfield (History)
Fresno City College - CA - #1 GPA - Dean's List (Other)
I love tutoring because I have always loved learning (in many topics) and have considered teaching as a profession. I tutored other students part-time while in college to help pay my way through school, in several courses, and have recently tutored English. In 2003 I made the Honor Roll/Dean's List at Fresno City College. I speak and read enough Spanish to tutor English as a Second Language, as well.
My primary expertise is in reading comprehension and writing, for any grade or age. I do, however, have well-rounded knowledge of music history and general history, so I can help you on almost any kind of literary or humanities-oriented coursework. I also play and teach basic to intermediate guitar.
Writing research papers and essays was my strength in high school and college, and I know the main formatting requirements. I have an extensive background in understanding the complexities of the English language as a whole. English is derived largely from many other languages, such as Old Germanic, Latin, and Greek. That's a simple reason why many people need help with it. I tailor my sessions to YOUR needs and courses of study. I find creative ways to help you tackle the most common problems of reading or writing.
I was always good in spelling bees and vocabulary tests in grade school and high school. Obviously, the more words you learn, the more proper spellings are learned as well.
I look forward to having you contact me for my help with whatever challenges you: vocabulary lists, grammar rules, organizing essays, etc. I can tell you more then and schedule a lesson at any library or coffee shop within the vicinity of Fresno State University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received mostly A grades in college English courses, and have written many A grade papers. I was on the Honor Roll at Fresno City College in 2003. In elementary school my California standards testing for reading comprehension showed a 12th grade level when I was in 5th grade. I have tutored off and on to an equivalent of about two years.
I was always good in spelling bees as a kid, and I also scored 100% in spelling tests. Because the rules of spelling in English don't always apply in many cases, I believe that tutoring it requires a lot of repetition (tests), memorization. and memory devices and tricks.
