I have been employed for three years now as a tutor for Club Z, a reading club in the San Joaquin Valley area that has tutors come in the homes of elementary school children and teach them subjects such as language arts and math to children who need help in those areas. I teach language arts and reading to children. I use several methods of teaching to help them to increase their skills. One method I use is to go over spelling words with them and making sure they understand the words they are having difficulty with. Another method I use is to use flash cards and ask the students what the words are to the pictures I show them. I also find that spelling workbooks and puzzles help them to grasp words easily. I am always amazed at how soon they grasp what I am teaching them and I always find that they improve in their reading and spelling after I have worked with them for three months. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
