About Garrett

Hello everyone!

I am a rising junior at UC Davis pursuing a major in Biological Sciences and minor in Computer Science, who will be tutoring various subject areas.

As a dean's honor student, I know that dedication, motivation, and strong work ethic will definitely pay off and yield incredible results.
Having 5 years of teaching/ tutoring experience, I understand how to encourage students to reach their full potential. I have had to pleasure to help many students and see how much they have improved over time. When I am tutoring, I provide advice in a fun enjoyable fashion.
What I love about tutoring is that you get to see the development of your student in their craft as well as an overall person in the process. I feel so proud when students accomplish their goals.

Being a biological sciences major in the well known College of Biological Sciences program at UC Davis, I have been blessed to have great professors and a strong curriculum that taught me how to better understand sophisticated scientific concepts (especially in the biology field), in order to make my learning more meaningful, instead of just mere memorization. Moreover, I have passed the SAT II Biology exam with a strong score, which shows my deep comprehension of biology. In my high school biology class, I received the Certificate of Excellence for Biology, which was awarded for my outstanding achievement of earning A+ grades for both semesters. Having taken many biology courses, I am knowledgeable on how to succeed, tackle difficult problems, and develop effective study strategies to better understand the material.

Since I was 8 years old, I have been playing clarinet and piano. For piano, I passed the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music Examination (Grade 8) with the highest level of merit. Also, I won the 2010 El Camino Youth Symphony Piano Concerto Competition, which earned me a spot to play a solo performance with the El Camino Youth Symphony later that year.
For clarinet, I have won many ensemble band awards in junior high and high school, been selected for multiple honor bands, and earned a command performance/ superior rating (highest honor) at the CMEA solo competition.

I strongly believe that having an academic support system will yield promising results and help individuals maximize their full potential.
During the school year, I provide weekly academic tutoring to underprivileged students in elementary math, elementary science, writing/grammar, biology, geography, basic science, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. Most of my students begin with limited knowledge, but after our tutoring sessions, improve to become the top students in their classes. In addition, I teach these students piano, clarinet, and music theory in order to make them well rounded individuals.
Also, I am a one-on-one swim instructor teaching students from 7-50 years old and coach practices for novice, intermediate, and competitive swimmers on the Flying Fish Swim Team. My teaching style focuses on improve their quality of strokes, speed, and efficiency.
Other experiences include teaching rehabilitating hospital patients how to play math games, cards, and make arts and crafts; training special needs children with their participation in baseball games; and educating special needs children on academic subjects and meaningful activities such as cooking. From my numerous experiences, I have learned how to effectively communicate ideas and advice to my peers, connect on a personal level, quickly diagnose the problem, and successfully formulate a solution.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but if possible, I will try to reschedule or have a makeup session.
My expertise and experience will allow me to provide beneficial tutoring sessions. Also, my love for science and music will contribute to an enjoyable learning environment for the student. I prefer to travel to the student's house, but if that is not possible, we can find a different location when the time comes. If you would like to incorporate music and science into the same lesson, we can arrange something to fit your interests. I think 1 hour lessons are the most effective.
As a tutor, I can utilize my skills, knowledge, and previous teaching experiences to help facilitate better academic understanding, performance, and improvement from my students as well as create an encouraging, fun, and meaningful learning environment for them.
I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goals.
