For test prep, if you are working from typical books, understand these books need to cover all students' levels. Are you finding with time you are not increasing your scores? These books are designed to only get you to SAT 680 (1360) or ACT 29-30. I have demonstrated repeatedly with WyzAnt over the last three years that I exceed these scores--by a lot. My proven results are also better than you will find on the websites of Kaplan, Princeton Review, Excel Test Prep, and others who offer only "your score will increase" or "+200 point increase in SAT score." Guess what? These "guarantees" are not very useful. With my Ph.D. in physics and 25 years of practical experience in business, I also am a great tutor for physics , all maths through calculus and early college levels and do have experience tutoring SAT AP Physics and Math 2 SAT Subject Tests. With me, students have all improved their scores for the SAT and/or the ACT, some to 1550 SAT (or 2300+ with the old test) and 35+ ACT. My goal for you is to have more increase in test scores than you expect from me at the start. To buttress that, I have an extensive library of "advanced" test rep books with titles like SAT 800 or 1600 and ACT 36. Working these kinds of problem is essential in getting the last 50-150 points (SAT) or 2-3 points on the ACT. I do not just claim I can do this, I have proved it with real students that had real problems. I have an ability to ferret out at what stage of solving test problems a student gets lost or confused. Then it is simple to determine what kind of practice exercises will overcome the roadblock the student has had in taking previous practice tests. I consistently work to improve students' test taking confidence, and show them how to lesson the feeling of time crunch, especially in the Critical Reading tests or (in ACT) Science Reasoning.
For physics I work with high school and college level students. I use your text and the additional texts I have including Halliday/Resnick/Krane and Hewitt's Conceptual Physics (which gets the concept across with much reduced math.)
For a first contact, I always provide a free 20-30 minute discussion, Q&A time, and roll out a plan after a test tutoring session of about 20 minutes. Then, if you wish, I would provide (for a fee) 30-60 minutes of actual tutoring, so the student can see if we are a good match. If you don't like the first session or don't think there is a good match between tutor and student, you do not pay. This is WyzAnt's "Good Match" guarantee and mine also. WyzAnt does have tutors that charge you less than I do, but they are not going to be able to give you the score progress that I historically have shown. I work on only the things I see are needed by the student. The rest I assign students as homework to bring back questions for me at the next session. Studying for the ACT and SAT can be very overwhelming on your own with those huge books! Studying for them can be easily postponed or forgotten about as you already have so many essays, tests, and projects during your junior year. Having the appointments scheduled with Lewis kept me accountable for getting my work done. Lewis kept me right on track, motivating and guiding me through each area that I struggled with. Lewis taught me so many tricks around very difficult math problems and well as ways to tackle the reading passages. Before every meeting Lewis came prepared with a stack of worksheets for the area that I was struggling with. These worksheets had wonderful explanations and were much easier to work through than the huge practice books that I bought. The amount and variety of resources that Lewis has including his tips on essays, writing/reading drills, drills on math tricks, drills on idioms, and so much more all kept the sessions interesting and engaging. Junior year of high school is quite hectic and rather busy so I often had to cancel or reschedule my sessions on short notice. Lewis was so understanding with my crazy schedule. After 2 study sessions with our son, a few of my observations about Mr. Lewis are described in the review title. There hasn't been any metrics to compare tutoring efficiency and effectiveness, maybe the most important characteristics, so I will leave that assessment to a follow-up review once I have something to compare against.
Mr. Lewis is attentive and a good listener because he takes the time to ask the right questions and listens without judging for a meaningful and respectful dialog. This is important especially for teenagers like my son. It creates an open and safe environment for our son to voice his concerns without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. It's very nice to receive regular and appropriate communication from Mr. Lewis. This is different compared with many other tutors. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

And I have learned what you need to learn to increase your scores and your confidence and can do it in the minimum of time.
I help prepare students for all sections of the ACT and SAT tests. I teach not only the subjects, but provide you with and train you on the best techniques to upgrade your score. Now, you will find that these techniques are different from those you are good at in school classes and tests, no, it will need a paradigm shift from you if you are willing. Even both the ACT and SAT test making companies have agreed that their tests to not measure how much you learned in school or know about the subjects. Or that they are even tests that measure how well you will do in college in college-level classes. No, these are tests to see how well you do on the ACT or SAT. The changes in both tests over the last year are attempts to align what they test more closely with Common Core goals for 11th and 12th graders.
For ACT English, I like to start with a practice test to be able to analyze the weaker areas and then focus on them with basic review and additional practicing of solution techniques. Then I follow up with assigning additional test questions or entire practice tests. This allows practicing of the techniques and keeping focus on the areas most needing attention. Finally I love to give a final practice test the week before the official test to measure the improvement that has been made in test taking and to bring your confidence to its highest level.
Relative to the new 2015-6 ACT version--
Basics: there are 5 text passages with about 15 questions each for a total of 75 questions in 45 minutes. That is 36 seconds for each question. Average score is 21. Students in silicon valley are looking for 30-34+ to get admitted to their colleges of choice. I can get you there while most of the private test prep companies will not. (They concentrate on the average student to get as many paying customers as possible.) In fact, 3 or 4 of my students that first paid and worked with the local Excel Test Prep company were told that anything above 30 on ACT was "pure luck. Nonsense. That is where I shine and can help you. The grammar section (38-42 questions) is about 15-18 rules. So just like math, it is clear cut. Review and learn these rules and see correct and incorrect sentences and you are fine. The "Productive Writing" part (22-24 questions) is about the organization (unity and coherence),; topic development; and precise, consistent style.
Don't take too long on any questions. You have 30 seconds per questions; do the easier question in less time.
Choose your order of answering questions (easy ones first, leave harder ones for later)
For approximately 20% (15-18 questions) of the questions, NO CHANGE is correct. Don't assume you have to find an error.
Normally these tests will be limited by the allowed time. So it requires keeping focused and using the techniques you have been taught.
To be successful on ACT preparation, the student must be prepared for a significant commitment and effort. A tutor can help the improvement process and keeping focus on the end concern--improving the test score. I recommend a minimum tutor time of 6 hours or 4 sessions of 1 1/2 hours.

Also we work on initial problem setup when that is difficult. ACT measures academic achievement. There's more to mastering this test than just improving math skills. The test-makers themselves admit that you can increase your score by preparing for the test. They also have stated in the past that these are not tests to measure how much you know or have learned in high school, or even tests to see how well you will do in college. No, they are tests to see how well you take the ACT or SAT tests. Period. This does require extensive practice and hard work to become fluent with these techniques. Working with an experienced tutor for 6-8 hours will streamline your quest for a better score.
Techniques to get more correct answers include: identifying just what information is given, using that information to solve by back-solving or plugging in the answers, picking numbers, process of elimination, strategic guessing and straightforward math. I also have visual figures for ratio/proportion problems and for number/average/total problems.

Several techniques I use are: 1) Pick your preferred order to work the 4 reading sections. 2) Change the order in which you answer the questions for your benefit (Not the benefit of the test makers). 3) Read the questions before reading the passage to have a better idea what to be looking for as you read the passage, and 4) spend only 30-60 (90 max) seconds skimming the passage before answering the questions--you are looking for the overall idea, not lots of details that may not be needed to answer the questions. This is a very difficult transition for students to make and it makes a big difference.
Students often are time limited on the Reading test.
The average test score is 20. For the schools students want to apply to, Silicon Valley students often start at 28, but want scores to be 33-36. I usually get them there.
I have helped prepare students for all the sections of ACT as well as the SAT. I teach those skills and techniques which help them to score higher. Extensive practice is required and hard work to become fluent with these techniques and to internalize the techniques so they can be accessed on the test.
Focus and use of the best techniques will be critical in scoring as high as your confidence and abilities take you. A tutor can help you zero in on efficient use of your time. I recommend a minimum time with your tutor of 6 hours or 4 sessions of 1 1/2 hours. But two months of weekly tutoring session is more reasonable. However, I have done last minute work with students, starting a week before the test. Homework is assigned so we cover in tutoring sessions the problem areas leading to faster score increases instead of reviewing areas where the student already is confident and knowledgeable.
At the initial session, I like to assign as homework a practice test. Then it becomes easy to analyze where the student presently is and analyze the weak areas. This is so I can focus in on the weak areas with basic reviews and practice of additional questions or further practice tests.
The ACT Reading section lasts 35 minutes with 40 questions. There are four reading passages of about 800 words each: one section each of prose fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. After reading each passage, about 10 questions to answer follow.
I have observed some consistently difficult questions types: inference, author's purpose, author's tone, and even vocabulary in context.
Finally I love to give another practice test the week before the official ACT test to see how much the student has improved, to maximize confidence going to the test, and to have additional missed questions to work over.
The ACT Science Reasoning Test requires NO specific scientific knowledge. (Surprised?) You will be asked to understand and make sense of six sets of scientific information that will be presented in graphs, charts, tables, and research summaries. Also you will have to make sense of one disagreement between a couple of scientists. These are qualities or techniques that will be useful the rest of your life because as an informed reader you will have to analyze scientific articles written in newspaper or on the web. Taking this test normally will be limited by the time allowed. (I always wanted more time.) So it requires judgment skills of the approach and techniques to use.
I help prepare students for all sections of ACT. I will train you to chose the best techniques and increase your score. My background is in science (physics, Ph.D.) and math where I have all through my life used these skills. This test does require extensive practice, hard work, and commitment to become fluent with these techniques.
A tutor can help you focus in on improvement with explanations, strategies, and various techniques. I like to start by assigning a practice test so I can analyze weak areas. Then, by giving additional questions or practice tests, we can focus in the areas where you missed a question. Last I love to give an ending test to measure how much a student has improved. It also gives me additional missed questions to focus on.
Algebra 1 is the first big hurdle to a technical career. It's really the ABCs of mathematics. The introduction of variable-based math is essential. A tutor can help smooth out the bumps. But with a solid foundation in prealgebra, algebra should hopefully be like more of the same.
I have used algebra in school and throughout my career. I have tutored students to help them with a smoother ride in algebra 1.
Topics include: simplifying and evaluating expressions, order of operations, variables, translating from word phrases to algebraic expressions, exploring rational numbers, square roots, solving linear equations, angles of triangles, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and other topics.
Algebra 2 is a state college and university requirement. So it's very important to get a good grade in this class.
It introduces trigonometry. Topics include equations and functions, factoring, graphing, conics (including quadratics), matrices, polynomials, and logarithms.
I have helped in tutoring a number of students in Algebra 2. And have used it as a way to prepare for trigonometry and calculus.
I have taught test preparation for the CBEST for two years. I am CBEST certified, having passed on the first try with no problems on any of the three sections. The CBEST was designed to test basic proficiency in math, reading, and writing.
I have become an effective coach and tutor. I will review with you the full set of basic skills required to pass the test on your first try. Testing strategies will be covered. For example, I will give you 3 novel approaches to different types of math word problems that don't require you to do the algebraic equations in the problem.
I have just finished working with a student on the math part of CBEST. She had taken the test twice and had passed the reading and writing portions, but failed the math part both times. She needed extensive review of the basics required for the test because it was some time since she had studied any math. In six sessions we finished reviewing all the individual areas covered in the test, finished an initial practice test and a "final" practice test to show improvement, and did multiple example problems in areas such as word problems where she was having difficulties. Results: 60% correct answers required to pass the test, she moved from 54% up to 70% and passed the test easily.
In my 6 years of tutoring I have helped numerous students in G1-6. I have helped a 2nd grader in math to progress 2 1/2 years in 30 sessions. (As measured by pre- and post-testing.) One of my specialties is study skills which often helps students get organized when they are having trouble in several subjects at one time. Geometry is really fun to learn and I like it as a tutor. A good grounding in geometry is very useful in everyday life. It is a stepping stone to taking higher level math classes like calculus. It is also a high school graduation requirement in California schools so it is important to pass this class. I took geometry in high school and have been using it ever since. Geometry is the study of objects and its measures. One of the keys to this class is memorizing all of geometry's vocabulary. Proofs are one of the main focuses of this class, aside from learning the actual properties of geometrical figures.

The quantitative portion of GMAT involves math (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems. If it has been a while since you learned this material, it only requires review of the covered areas. I am an expert at this and have the needed material at hand. This same review is done for CBEST (as well as ACT and SAT if required.) The geometry is very basic plus no trig or calculus is required. The data sufficiency portion is found in no other test, so I teach the approaches and techniques needed, along with giving you quizzes and tests until you have the confidence to do well here.

One of my favorite areas is working with students in the 4th-9th grades since learning the fundamentals of grammar here serves them well the rest of their lives. Two of my favorite books are Under the Grammar Hammer Hammer (D. Cazort) and Grammar in 15 Minutes a Day (Learning Express.) Helpful is taking pretests so that in tutoring we can cover the areas that are shaky and not spend time in tutoring the areas that are known. The last book mentioned works well with tutoring by being broken down to 30 lessons that can easily be covered as part of a tutor session. Very helpful is having multiple examples of incorrect and correct usages in sentences and having a review quiz for each grammar area. Grammar is also tied into writing: poor grammar leaves the reader confused and lessens understanding of what the author is trying to say in their writing. Good grammar is so familiar to me now that I collect signs posted by businesses that have passed through knowledgeable people and still have glaring grammar errors.
Typical areas covered range from wrong verb tense, fused or run-on sentences, subject-verb agreement, missing or unnecessary commas, etc.
So if you would like a tutor to improve your overall grammar knowledge, I would be a good choice for you.
I have spent about 3 years teaching phonics at the K-2 level. I didn't learn phonics until I was in my 40s! I remember struggling with reading in the 3rd grade.
In the past I have taught phonics to students from K through 3rd grade.
I am well qualified to tutor Physics at any level through college for students wanting to clarify areas or to move ahead in their understanding of physics. My background is a B.A. in physics and a Ph.D. in solid-state physics (experimental). I worked in the semiconductor industry as engineer and manager for 25 years and have now been tutoring for the last 12 years. I have tutored some students to increase their confidence in physics and have taken several students through the SAT Physics Subject Test.
I am comfortable that my knowledge of physics is excellent, but also that I have the experience and know-how to explain concepts, analyze solutions to difficult problems, and tutor students in this area. (There is a difference, as I'm sure you know, between people who have solid knowledge of physics and those who can actually transfer that knowledge and confidence to their students.) I have a library of about 10 physics texts and backup books, including the longstanding college favorite by Resnick, Halliday, and Krane. On the other side, I have conceptual physics texts that approach each physics area with minimum math and maximum figures, word explanations and examples from the real world. These book help immensely with students who get confused by all the math and lose focus on what the real physics is. I also have books for AP physics, so I am quite confident that I can help you. Prealgebra is the stepping stone to the world of math, the basis of algebra 1 and following courses. It is necessary for a technical career. I understand that it is uncomfortable for many students. I did well enough when I took the PSAT to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship semi finals. I have worked successfully with a number of students preparing for the PSAT. I also have several books giving practice tests and reviewing the knowledge areas needed to do well on the test. Taking a practice pre-test and another one at the end of tutoring helps to see what areas need the most work and progress made during the tutoring. It helps to advance confidence and reduce the stress level when taking the actual exam.

The SAT math questions are similar in type and form from test to test. So practice does make a difference. To be successful in preparing for the SAT math, the student must be willing to put in a significant commitment and time effort. That's why I recommend a minimum of 6 hours with a tutor to prepare. For the SAT math test, students normally find themselves time-limited so it requires judgment skills of what techniques to use rather than just plodding along doing extra time-consuming work. T
There are some "tricks" to finding answers even when you don't know the solution. tip is to rethink any SAT/Math question that is taking you longer than 60 seconds to solve. For almost every SAT problem there is in fact an easier way of doing it than the straight forward plug-along way the College Board expects and wants you to solve these questions. In fact, there are several techniques--widely taught--on how to do 2-variable algebra questions with 2 equations WITHOUT using any time-consuming algebra. Truly amazing. Especially useful because during the test your mind may become mush and I like using my mind less. Are you interested?
I start with a practice test to be able to analyze weak areas and focus on them with basic review and practice in solving techniques on additional selected problems. A final practice test at the end of your tutoring will show the progress you have made and help increase your confidence going into the test.
I am highly rated for SAT/Math at Wyzant. I am in the top 0.01%, sort of like the interest banks now give you. My current numbers for all Wyzant tutors within 40 miles of me: #2 out of 589 WyzAnt tutors locally for SAT prep, 2/337 for SAT/Math, 2/598 for SAT/Reading, and 2/589 for SAT/Writing. it is the same in ACT prep: 1/426 for ACT prep in general, 1/231 ACT/English, 1/269 ACT/Math, 1/426 ACT/Reading, and 1/133 ACT/Science.

I help prepare students for all sections of the SAT by teaching those skills and techniques which prepare them to score higher. This does require some time to do reasonably extensive practice, an effort to become fluent with the techniques I teach, and a desire to do better on the SAT. I have tutored over 25 student at WyzAnt in SAT and ACT test prep. And I am highly rated by WyzAnt in their listings of WyzAnt tutors within 40 miles of me. Like current bank interest, I am at the top 0.01% level (I am listed as the top 1 or 2 tutor out of 400-900 Wyzant tutors).
The total number of questions a student can finish on SAT tests will normally be severely limited by the time allowed. Areas I incorporate in my SAT tutoring: cutting a minute spent off each passage in the reading section; purposely choosing the order in which you do the questions to benefit you and reduce time stress; only spending 60 seconds or less reading through each passage; reading each question twice; eliminating 2 or more of the answers, then going deeper in your analysis of the remaining answers to find the best and most logical answer.
I am most comfortable with a minimum of 6 tutoring hours per test or 18 hours if you are doing all 3 tests. The amount of time really depends on how many of the tests you want to work on and how high a score your goal is.
With some students I was only allowed 2 sessions, others a month or 4-6 sessions, and others 2-3 months.
I much prefer using the Princeton Review/Cracking the SAT book. But Princeton, Kaplan, and local private companies like Elite and Kings Academy need to reach the most students they can, so are configured to raise your score only to 660- 680 (or 1800-2000). If you want to score higher, I have available, and have used, advanced books designed to bring you up the last 50-200 difficult points.
At the start, I assign a practice test for homework (or use a test you have taken) so I can analyze the weak and strong areas and then personalize how the tutoring work will be done for you. Subsequently I focus on the weak areas with basic reviews and strategies and then practice with additional examples or tests.
A major portion of my tutoring time is taken analyzing the problems students missed on their tests, but without the student knowing which was the right answer. So we talk through why their wrong answer was wrong and which answer they now think is correct--and why. I have not seen any of the private test prep companies that do a good job of this and a lot of learning possibilities are lost.
At least at the end of our sessions I will assign a second practice test. This will show both you and me the amount your student has improved and helps to raise their confidence before they take the actual proctored test.
The critical reading test is 70 minutes long in 3 sections. The type of questions are sentence completion and passage-based reading comprehension. The passages range in length from about 100 to 850 words and cover subjects in the humanities, social studies, natural sciences, and literary fiction. The sentence completion questions are in order of difficulty. They have three categories: definition/similar meaning; contrast/cause and effect; makes sense in context. The passage-based reading questions are not in order of difficulty.
I am not a fan of spending many hours learning a set of SAT Vocabulary cards. I think that time can be much better put to use to improve your SAT score. The "New" SAT will have a more accessible vocabulary. Instead I have students spend time reviewing word roots, prefixes, and suffixes. These will allow you to relate to the meaning of an unfamiliar word by connecting it to another word with the same root. For SAT it is not necessary to have an exact definition, but only a general idea of the meaning.

Here is an overview of the Writing test. The current SAT Writing test takes 60 minutes, has one essay (25 minutes) and two sections of multiple choice questions (25 min. and 10 min.). The multiple choice sections have three types of questions: identifying sentence errors (18); improving sentences (25); and improving paragraphs (6). The multiple choice questions are mainly concerned with grammar rules and rhetorical skills.
Writing is a skill needed for success in both college and throughout your lifetime in the workplace. for the SAT, you will write a first draft of an short, original, persuasive essay under timed conditions. It will assess your ability to develop and express ideas effectively. It also attempts to evaluate your ability to do the kind of writing required in college. This should be writing that develops a point of view, presents ideas logically and clearly, has at least 2 examples illustrating your thesis statement, and uses precise language. The essay counts 30% toward the final score. The scoring takes into account that you are writing a first draft, not a final draft, and that you are writing under extreme time constraints.
The Writing section of the SAT is being combined with the Reading section in 2016 as the Verbal section. And the top SAT score will revert back to 1600, the way it was before the writing test was included in 2006. The essay will be continued separately as an option (not required).
The multiple choice sections require you to: recognize sentence errors, choose the best version of a piece of writing, and improve paragraphs within a writing context. They will include 49 questions on grammar, usage, paragraph organization, and multi-paragraph coherence. It assesses your ability to improve a piece of writing through revision and editing. These sections count 70% toward the final Writing score.
Since the Writing section involves 70% multiple choice questions testing grammar and rhetoric and there are only 16-17 grammar rules tested, the Writing section should be the easiest to advance to a high score. All my students I expect to get 10 out of 12 on the essay (using my pointers) and enough of the grammar to get to over 700 on that test.
I help prepare students for all sections of the SAT. It requires extensive practice time and hard work to become fluent with these techniques. A tutor can help you focus in on improvement with explanations, strategies and various techniques. I recommend a minimum of 6 one-hour sessions with a tutor when preparing for the SAT Writing test. If your goal is higher than the 650-675 score that Kaplan, Princeton Review, and local companies like Elite and Kings Academy are designed for, I have several advanced books that are written to take you the last 75-150 difficult points in your score.
I start by assigning for homework a practice test including writing an essay under time-limited test conditions. (Or if you have already taken a practice test, I use that.) From this it is usually easy to see where to concentrate. Additional practice problems and essays help increase confidence and ability to react more quickly. An ending practice test helps document the progress that has been made by the student and give them added confidence.
Trigonometry can be a fun class. It links with precalculus. It is crucial that all the techniques we explore here connect directly with the techniques we see in precalculus and then calculus. Trig has many applications in physics and engineering.
Approached properly it is relatively easy to learn. I've been a tutor for six years and have had success in raising students' grades and their focus and interest in the subject. I tell my students that this is maybe the easiest and most fun math class they will take. I believe that everyone can pass or get a good grade in this class and move on with that confidence into precalculus and calculus.
In SAT and ACT test prep I am actually more highly ranked in Critical Reading, Writing, and English than I am in Math. But in all cases I am on the front page, ranked a month ago #1-#4 out of 800-1000 local WyzAnt tutors claiming to teach thosetest prep areas to 10-12th graders. Then seeing what I was doing with older siblings, my tutor parents began requesting me to teach their 4th and 6th graders (all but one boys) to write better.
That is a challenge; often 4th grade boys would rather spend their time on video games than sit down and write a 3 page essay for their tutor every week. But that is what I have done. Each student started out writing 1/2 page in BIG letters to fill up the little area they were using. In all cases these students were writing 2 1/2-3 pages for me every week accomplished in each case within 2 months. If you want this for your son or daughter I will do this and if you want, ask one of my tutor parents to talk with you about this progress.
Of course, writing 3 pages each week is only the first goal. Then we start the hard work of how do the revising and making their writing better and more interesting for the reader. I use an excellent book (All Write) that lists the required steps in developing good writing habits and styles. Then I get them using a dictionary and thesaurus to increase their vocabulary. As reward for working hard, I leave them a word ladder exercise which is fun and yet increases their vocabulary (without their realizing it because it is fun and a healthy challenge for them. I also use a good grammar book, Under the Grammar Hammer, for learning better grammar for their writing, and the book, 643 Things to Write About, so my students can pick their own topic each week. I also work to improve reading comprehension even as they study better writing methods. My bottom line that seems to be working is to make writing fun for my students.
