I like to use my life experience to make a subject live for a student. This make is easier to grasp, and even more important, easier to remember. I emphasize an approach that helps a student learn to learn, rather than just memorizing facts.
My BA is in History. I had originally intended to become a high school teacher, but changed my mind mid way through college. Just as well. I've learned a lot since then. I have worked at a lot of things, both blue collar and white. This has given me a breadth of experience that I bring to the table in any teaching situation.
I have taken graduate level courses in History as well as modern literature and other subjects that helped me as a writer and as a student. Over the course of the years I have helped the children of friends and relations with their studies and have taught in many contexts. Through this, I have learned some things about teaching. People remember the things that seem relevant to their lives. Relating subjects to personal experience is often the best way to bring about lasting learning.
Although many skills, both physical and mental can only be mastered with continued practice, it is possible to make that practice an exploration rather than a chore. This is my goal as a tutor.
I believe that this approach makes the process of learning both more fun and more lasting. In my own experience, I have found that enthusiasm for a subject eases the process of learning. I strive to emulate the enthusiasm that my best teachers and professors had for their subjects. I will work hard to impart that enthusiasm to you.
Let me help you to read with understanding, think with clarity and excel in your subjects. I like to use my life experience to make a subject live for a student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in History from American University and some graduate studies after that. I have always been interested in the history of the United States and have studied it extensively. I have helped the children of friends and relatives with their studies and have had some success in improving both their grades and understanding of the subject. Most importantly, I like to explore the ways that the events of the past have brought us to the present, and by doing so make history a living study, rather than a relating of dry facts.I have a BA in History from American University.
