San Jose State University
Hi, I'm Diana! I recently earned a BA in Japanese and a BA in Linguistics at San Jose State University. I earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for my Japanese major classes and a 3.975 GPA for my linguistics major classes. I discovered my passion for the Japanese language and culture during high school. I took Japanese for four years in high school, and continued my studies in college. One of my Japanese elective courses was a Japanese linguistics class. This led me to add a linguistics major. Double majoring in linguistics allowed me to learn more about all languages. I learned about the sounds and structures of languages, as well as sociolinguistic factors. I also completed the undergraduate TESOL certificate. These classes helped me understand the structure, grammar, and sounds of the English language specifically; I also learned about second language teaching, acquisition, and development. I think the linguistics major classes especially helped me better understand second/foreign language learning as well as the structure of languages.
Japanese has been my favorite class since high school, and I have never earned less than an A in any of the Japanese courses I have taken. I was a TA for Japanese for two years in high school and two years after I graduated. I have some tutoring and teaching experience, and I am very familiar with grading and writing tests and quizzes. I am very passionate about Japanese, and I greatly enjoy sharing my knowledge about the language and culture with students. Adding a linguistics major has not only helped me better understand the structure and sounds of Japanese but also learn about sociolinguistic factors.
Although I have little experience tutoring ESL, I believe the classes I have taken have provided me with the knowledge needed to tutor this subject. Being a native speaker is helpful, but the key is understanding the actual rules of the language, which I have recently studied. Hi, I'm Diana! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native speaker of English. As a linguistics major, I studied the structure, sounds, and meaning of English in depth. I am at SJSU for their MA Linguistics program, so I continue to learn more about English and other languages. I completed the undergraduate TESOL certificate program. The Patterns of English course especially helped me understand the structure of English. In addition, the Introduction to Second Language Development and Teaching course taught me about strategies for teaching second/foreign language learners.
I took 4 years of Japanese in high school (levels 1, 2, 3, and AP). Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Japanese and linguistics at San Jose State University. I have completed my Japanese major courses with a 4.0 GPA, and I am about to graduate this May. I am very passionate and thorough about my Japanese work and always try my best. I have tutored lower level Japanese in high school. Also, I had a few weeks of experience teaching level 2 Japanese in high school.
