My goal is to turn students' weaknesses into strengths and to enable students to get the grade they want in exam preparation. I believe in guiding rather than instructing; by leading students on a path of discovery to learn, retain and apply, in order to avoid making the same mistakes twice. Students are responsible for their own learning which is to say that firstly, hard graft is required to acquire a vocabulary base substantive to pass SAT. Secondly it is also required to consistently apply the strategies effectively to pass the reading. Thirdly, it is needed to develop cohesion and coherence in essay writing, and to allow a structure that allows ideas to be freely expressed. So there are no short cuts to success, but the rewards are many.
Students should think of test prep as a life lesson: what you learn in the process of taking this course is going to stand you in good stead, not only in college but later in life. A good vocabulary is an asset that will enable you to impress people who you need to impress, whether you are trying to get into college, writing assignments at college or having a job interview once you have graduated.
All that I require from students is the motivation to succeed and the willingness to learn. Oh, and an infinite capacity for hard work. But you will probably be expecting that sooner rather later, and probably later as well.
Aside from having an impressive range of vocabulary at your disposal, the other key to success is recognizing the different question types, knowing exactly what you have been asked for and applying the strategies successfully.
My approach is to give new students a diagnostic to assess any areas of weakness or uncertainty. Depending on what emerges, I prepare materials to address these issues and ensure that any weaknesses were turned into strengths. With writing, I would specifically ask to see a sample of the student's writing to locate any problems. I would then concentrate on building clarity of expression, the use of asophistcated level of vocabulary, cohesion and coherence, and asense of structure.
This is what I concentrated on during the two and a half years that I worked for Huntington, tutored in a private capacity and the twenty four years that I have been teaching reading and other skills to ESL students in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. I am also an IELTS speaking and writing examiner and know exactly is required to succeed.
I can assist you with:
-Preparation for success with time sensitive exams including IELTS, SAT, ACT and TOEFL that takes into account the students' needs.
-Help you develop confidence and boost your grade performance in writing, including basic sentence writing, paragraph and essay development, college applications and graduate thesis work.
-Enable you to become confident in your conversational ability. You can hold your own in conversation for both native and non-native English speakers.
-Help younger learners to build their reading, writing, grammar skills
-Work on all ESL skills areas.
I look forward to working with you all.

Tim worked with my nine-year-old son this past summer two times a week to help with reading and writing. My son is the anti school work kid and I was dreading the complaining about going to work with Tim but he never did. In fact he looked forward to it. Tim is patient and worked well with my son.Jennifer, 14 lessons with Tim
Familiar with the reading/writing portions of the SAT
Throughout the summer, Tim helped me with the reading and essay portions of the SAT. In the beginning, he guided me through the SAT questions and helped me learn how to approach them effectively. He would later help me grade my essays while I was practicing, and gave me advice on which areas that I needed improvement in. With each lesson, I was able to answer things faster, get more of them correct, and do better on the essays.Thomas, 8 lessons with Tim

My son was preparing for the SAT (reading and writing part) with Tim and just for one month increased his score on 90 points (from 540 to 630). Tim is very consistent and attentive tutor who pays attention to student weaknesses and is able to make them much stronger. Also Tim is kind and patient so my son was happy to work with him. Patient, hardworking, and knowledgeable tutor
Tim has helped my junior immensely in his Reading/Writing Section for the SAT Reasoning Test. Before joining Tim's sessions he was getting scores in the 650-700 range. After a couple of months he gained enough confidence through the unique test-taking strategies Tim offers in his consultations to get consistent scores in the 750-800 range on his practice tests. He patiently repeats concepts multiple times until the student masters it. Also, Tim has further developed my son's writing skills and helped him revise essays for summer programs and the UC prompts. I highly recommend Tim for anyone looking to improve their reading and writing skills.Trish, 23 lessons with Tim
Tim helped my daughter to improve her essay writing skills in the preparation for the SAT. Thanks to Tim she was able to score 17, which is higher than the average of 14 for the 2017 year according to the collegeboard report. In my opinion a pretty good result for someone who started learning English just six years ago. I am pleased with the help Tim provided to my daughter and would definitely recommend him to others.Dmitry, 9 lessons with Tim
Great tutor for SAT Reading
Tim has been helping my daughter for the last few weeks with SAT reading. My daughter is much more confident and making fewer mistakes compared to when she started off. Tim is very patient and provides guidance on how she can avoid making mistakes. He asks her why she chose a certain answer and forces her to think; this has helped her to properly assess and pick the correct answer. He provides her with different ways to tackle the questions. Tim is also very punctual and responds very quickly with any questions. We would highly recommend Tim.Leena, 29 lessons with Tim
Skillful and patient tutor
I would like to take the guessing out of your looking for a good tutor--you just found one. Tim has been coming to our house to coach my daughter in the preparation for an SAT. Tim is very methodical and has super command of the subject. There is not silver bullet in getting ready for an SAT, but I see my kid's reading comprehension is trending up and I like what you see. Tim was able to motivate my daughter to compose weekly SAT essays and this is a big one. My recommendation is that you give Tim a try and see for yourself how your family can aim at the higher SAT sores.Igor, 27 lessons with Tim
