My goal is to turn students' weaknesses into strengths and to enable them make the changes they need to get the grades they want in exam preparation and in their school coursework. I believe in guiding rather than instructing; by leading students on a path of discovery to learn, retain and apply, in order to avoid making the same mistakes twice. Students are responsible for their own learning which is to say that firstly, hard graft is required to acquire a vocabulary base substantive to pass SAT. Secondly, reading comprehension strategies must be applied effectively and consistently to eliminate errors and realize one's full potential. Thirdly, it is needed to develop cohesion and coherence in essay writing, and to allow a structure that allows ideas to be connected and cogently expressed. So there are no short cuts to success, but the rewards are many.

Students should think of test prep as a life lesson: what you learn in the process of taking this course is going to stand you in good stead, not only in college but later in life. A good vocabulary is an asset that will enable you to impress people who you need to impress, whether you are trying to get into college, writing assignments at college or having a job interview once you have graduated.

All that I require from students is the motivation to succeed and the willingness to learn. Oh, and an infinite capacity for hard work. But you will probably be expecting that sooner rather later, and probably later as well.

Aside from having an impressive range of vocabulary at your disposal, the other key to success is recognizing the different question types, knowing exactly what you have been asked for and applying the strategies successfully.

My approach is to give new students a diagnostic to assess any areas of weakness or uncertainty. Depending on what emerges, I prepare materials to address these issues and ensure that any weaknesses were turned into strengths. With writing, I would specifically ask to see a sample of the student's writing to locate any

ESL/ESOL

I can help with the teaching of English as a Second or foreign language to non-native speakers, who either immigrated to an English speaking country or have re-located there to study for academic purposes. Classes typically focus on the four main skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening, involving a high degree of participation from students who must use the language in order to become familiar with it. Private lessons for motivated individuals can explore each of these skill areas in depth with added bonus of having the tutor/teacher's undivided attention. I have experience of teaching all ages and abilities, from children to adult learners, at junior and high school, private language school and at university. I have taught general English, business English, and exam prep (FCE and IELTS), in the Middle East, Europe, the U.S.A and Asia.
Grammar,

Grammar

I have been teaching English for more than 26 years, which has included an intensive grammar focus incorporated into lessons on specific reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Grammar awareness is always intrinsic to my ESL teaching. My work would be incomplete if I neglected to focus on it because it is essential for students to to be aware of the grammar they use, when and how to use it in order to progress.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proof reading is a precise skill and one that I have acquired through teaching writing for 22 years. I have that meticulous attention to detail that is required, so much so that when I read published fiction or non-fiction, I am constantly finding errors which should have been corrected at the final pre-publication stage.

I have been teaching reading strategies and reading comprehension skills for more than 20 years and I am confident that I can show you how to muster what can often seem elusive and mystifying. Having good studies means organizing meticulously and using time effectively. Having an MA in TESL and a BA in English indicates that I have proven study skills. I have been teaching students how to learn, retain and use vocabulary as part of ESL studies for the past 25 years. Acquiring vocabulary is essential if students are to express themselves adequately and competently in another language. For native speakers preparing for SAT and ACT, I have also demonstrated the importance of learning vocabulary, which is a lifelong skill that can give students the confidence to express themselves, and lead them to be more successful in their academic and professional lives.

ACT English

I have been helping students prepare for ACT tests for six years. By pinpointing students' needs, I am able to work with them to improve their weaker parts of their competencies, as well as reinforcing areas that they feel more confident in. Preparing for the ACT involves learning how to read and understand questions at speed, and having the reading strategies and skills and the grammar awareness to answer in the blink of an eye. It also involves a willingness to learn a significant amount of vocabulary which will also serve the student as a resource to be used later in life, at college and when hunting for work afterwards.

Thank you, Mr. Charles!

My experience under Mr. Charles' tutoring has helped me to greatly improve my expression and the way I form arguments. His experience and skills with finding supporting examples and neatly rephrasing sentences were invaluable. I also appreciated his patience and live feedback on every lesson. Thanks to him, I'm much more confident in my ability to write critical, well thought-out essays.

Comprehensive, helpful, and flexible - Great tutor!

I am a student in high school and I found Tim's profile while looking for help with the SAT Essay portion online, since local tutoring institutions were closed due to the virus outbreak. Even though Tim did not live in my time zone, we were able to figure out a time that worked for both of our schedules. For our lessons, Tim used Google Documents to connect with me, which was great because I find Google Documents to be very intuitive and easy to use. On the first lesson, he gave me a comprehensive lesson on the devices and techniques I needed to look out for in order to do a successful rhetorical analysis, the type of essay that is required for the SAT. He is clearly very knowledgeable about what he tutors and gave me a lot of helpful information I could work with. With further lessons, I would be assigned to write an essay as homework and we would discuss it and make edits and improvements during the tutoring session. I felt that this was a good use of the time we had together. Compared to some of my previous experiences, where the tutor frequently sat and watched while I worked, doing little to help me, I got a lot more out of working with Tim. Because I was writing the essay on my own time instead of during the session, my time with Tim could be better spent targeting problem areas and making improvements. He was also very specific and constructive with his feedback, so I had a very clear idea of what I needed to improve at and how to do it. Additionally, Tim was very flexible and accommodating when I decided to shift the focus of our sessions away from the SAT Essay portion and to instead preparing for the AP English Language and Composition exam. He easily adapted our session to focus on helping me be successful on that exam, and I realized also that some of the work we did earlier for the SAT Essay portion was also applicable with the AP English Language and Composition exam. Overall, my experience with Tim was positive and I felt very prepared for my exam. I'm very thankful for his help and I feel like I improved over the time we worked together.

A good tutor

Very patient and knowledgeable tutor. We did many tests on grammar and reading, it really helped that he established the order of the questions. That made it seem more manageable and organized. Furthermore, we compiled a vocabulary list where we wrote down words that are likely to appear on the SAT. It was good that we started to do timed tests after some practice, the transition felt easy and not stressful. Overall, a great tutor and the lessons were really enjoyable.

Played a major part in editing my Master's thesis within short notice.

From the limited time he helped me of within a week of when my thesis was due, Tim went through my entire 50+ page Master's thesis together with me page-by-page. He was quick and very thorough, despite the paper being with a specialized subject - Tim was able to suggest a better, more compact word choice while consistently retaining the entire meaning of what I have originally written. He quickly understood what I was writing within short notice and we edited the paper together while he explained exactly where I went wrong. I have the tendency to apply my (as my actual advisor of my thesis implied) "broken English" as I wrote, despite that - Tim rapidly understood what I meant and corrected my whole essay. Admittedly I didn't expect this much help at short notice of admittedly within the weeks of when my thesis was due. However, his help may have possibly saved my master's thesis. I rightly have him mentioned as part of my acknowledgements section. I am very fortunate in meeting him promptly after my initial messaging online after coming back to this site after four years.
