Enthusiastic Teacher Seeks Eager Learners

I have had a plethora of experiences teaching and tutoring over the past 20 years. I began my career in education tutoring with the Americorp's "Tell me a Story" program, where, after working with students one on one during the day, I facilitated and after school program that used theater to reinforce literacy. Since then, I have tutored both adults and children in a variety of situations. For instance, I have tutored adults learning English as a second language and students on independent study needing extra science instruction. In order to supplement my K-8 multi-subject teaching credential, I am currently working on my Single-Subject Science credential, which will qualify me to teach science from Kindergarten through 12th grade . I have been teaching 6th ,7th , and 8th grade for the past 5 years and take pride in my ability to support students with a myriad of needs, strengths, and abilities.
My favorite thing about tutoring is engaging in a dialogue with students as I help them develop their own understanding of the concepts they are struggling to grasp. My joy in teaching is at it's height when a student realizes something they have been struggling to understand and you can almost see the light click on. I enjoy recognizing where students are at, meeting them there, and then helping them move forward in their learning to develop a deeper understanding of the content. It is essential to me that students understand things conceptually, rather than just memorizing facts and formulas, due to the fact that conceptual understanding allows them to apply their learning to other situations and integrate it into their knowledge base.
I am an outstanding science teacher for several reasons. First and foremost is my fascination with science, which drives my own quest to know everything there is to know about how our world works. My enthusiasm for science is contagious and my deep understanding of science concepts provides a strong foundation from which to teach. Also, I earned my Bachelors in Anthropology, which lead me to study various cultures, as well as human biology, evolution, geography, geology, linguistics and archeology. I also took a number of Astronomy classes, just because I am intrigued by the working of the universe. I have been teaching science to middle school students for five years now and in the process have learned more about teaching, as well as gaining the deeper understanding that comes with teaching a subject. Currently I am working towards my single-subject science credential in order to improve my teaching practice specifically when it comes to science, because it is my belief that learning to be good scientists leads to living a healthy lives and creating positive change.
I am an outstanding English tutor primarily due to my love of language. I am a veracious reader and avid writer, which, in itself, helps one to write well and recognize what constitutes good writing. I have tutored students in literacy frequently over that past 20 years and continue to enjoy helping others develop their writing. During my student teaching, my mentor teacher was so impressed with my ability to teach writing that he allowed me to plan and execute the writing lessons for his class using the "Step Up Curriculum". This was so successful that I soon had a class full of enthusiastic writers. Therefore, I initiated an after school writer's workshop for those student who wanted to go further with their writing. As a result of this workshop, two of my students received awards from the Redwood Writing Competition. The Redwood Writing Project is a County wide organization to support local writing and I have attended several of their trainings since then. I reread "The Art of Teaching Writing" each year as I develop the curriculum for my classroom. I also work hard to develop my own writing skills. I have read many books on how to write well and have experimented with the exercises they suggest for improving one's writing. I have engaged in the writing process, including peer editing and extensive revision in order to improve upon my work and grow as writer. I am committed to teaching writing as both an art and an essential communication skill and this is reflected in my teaching practice.
I look forward to working with hard-working students. I am more than willing to help you move towards your learning goals and gain a deeper understanding of the content you'd like to learn. Please, feel free to contact me with any questions you might have or to schedule a lesson.
