My love of teaching comes from a lifelong passion for learning. William Butler Yeats put it best when he said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." My goal is to see my students enjoy the process of learning as much as the content itself. Having graduated with honors all throughout my own educational career, I know that hard work, dedication, and this passion pay off. I work full-time in a low socioeconomic area and nothing brings me more pleasure than to see disenfranchised students make the real-world connections between learning and success in life. Having taught a plethora of elementary grades and topics, I am well versed in the academic demands faced by students. I know how to plan, deliver, and evaluate lessons that will challenge without overwhelming them. I am a GLAD and GATE certified teacher with extensive professional development and training in Common Core, ELD, and have many instructional strategies at my disposal to help your child become more successful in school.
I have my Bachelor's degree in Business and have taken many math courses in college. Having taught elementary for many years I have had the opportunity to participate in multiple professional development opportunities to enhance my skills for teaching math. As a GATE certified teacher I have ideas and strategies for deepening understanding and developing critical thinking and mathematical practices.
I have had significant training on how to analyze, evaluate, and teach common core standards to the depth and complexity intended and expected of students in today's academic climate. In order to compete and succeed in a global economy students need to be proficient in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. The new common core standards integrate these much needed skills into the academic, social, technical, and listening/speaking domains making them more cohesive, practical, and pertinent for today's students.
I have taught elementary students of all ages for nearly a decade. During that time I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of students and families with diverse backgrounds, educational levels, and needs. I have taught all subject areas and administered the state testing to students yearly and am familiar with new and old curriculum in multiple content areas.
If you want to sharpen your skills, get ahead, or need to catch up, whatever your concernsI am here to help. I am generally available in the evening hours and on weekends by appointment, but am also happy to arrange online lessons as well. If you are local, I can come to you or you can come to me, and if you are far, you can come to me, we can conduct the lesson online, or we can meet somewhere. There are many options to fit schedules! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
