University of California, Irvine (Biological Sciences)
I'm a recent graduate of the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences. One of the main courses necessary to graduate with my particular degree was Organic Chemistry. I had many struggles with the subject at first, but after seeing a tutor weekly to improve, I saw a huge turnaround. After my first quarter, I began to excel in all of my Organic Chemistry classes and eventually had the opportunity to become a tutor for the very subject I struggled with. As a tutor for the UCI Chemistry Department, I held weekly office hours and review sessions before each test to ensure that students could have the turnaround that I did. Since I know what it is like to struggle with school, I feel that I have a better perspective of how to simplify subjects for others. At the end of a year of tutoring with the UCI Chemistry Department, I was recognized for outstanding contributions for the program.
I truly fell in love with tutoring and continue to do so in my daily life with family and friends in various subjects. Although I have the most experience in tutoring Organic Chemistry, I also have a strong proficiency in the areas of algebra and my major of biological sciences. Before starting college, one of my favorite subjects in school was Algebra.
I love working with kids and just people in general and it makes me excited to know that I've helped someone understand something they previously struggled with. Often I may come up with little jokes or tricks to remember material and make it a more fun learning experience for everyone involved! Some tricks I used in high school have been useful to me throughout the years as I continually got more in depth with biology.
I have a generally flexible schedule, although I ask that students give me at least 24 hours notice if they would like to cancel our session. Additionally, I would be happy to schedule a make up appointment in case a cancellation does occur. I always want to make sure that I am doing a good job, so please feel free to give any feedback or critiques to help me help you!
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you overcome your struggles just like I did! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
