About Deborah

I am a retired physician with a passion for teaching others about the amazing worlds of science and medicine. I have a BS in both chemistry and biology from Maryville University in St. Louis. I attended medical school at the University of Missouri and completed my residency in Family Medicine at the University of Iowa. I practiced in the Roseville, CA area for 20 years.

As Family Physician, I felt one of my main duties was to educate my patients, helping them to understand how their bodies work and how various treatments affected the body. I was active in planning and participating in both patient and physician education programs. Outside of medicine, I have been active in junior high, high school, and college age students at my church and through various mentoring activities. What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a student develop skills to teach themselves and work independently. My goal is to work myself out of a job. For me, that is the greatest success.

I have extensive knowledge in basic biology and chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy. I used these everyday in my career as a physician. My degrees are BS in biology and chemistry, and MD. I was certified by the American Board of Family Physicians before retirement. I also have 100 hours towards a Masters in Medical Management. My second passion is music. I play a variety of instruments and have completed college courses in theory, MIDI instrumentation, and song writing

I am available most afternoons and a few mornings. Please contact me if you feel I can meet your needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

BS in biology and chemistry
MD from University of Missoui
Family Practice Residency at the University of Iowa

Biochemistry

I was a chemistry major in college and biochemistry is part of that knowledge. As a physician biochemistry is an important part of understanding how the human body works. Which drugs to use, how they effect human tissue, and potential side effects are the main area where I have used this. I feel I can assist a student in understanding the complexities of this area as related to the human body.

Biology

I have a BS in biology and chemistry. And I am a MD now retired.

Elementary Math

I had a math minor along with a chemistry/biology major in college. Math was also a big part of our family life as I wanted my children to learn to use it in everyday situations. It has continued to be a big part of their lives as one son is an engineer and the other is a math professor at UC Long Beach.

Elementary Science

Science has been my passions since I was a child. This lead me to medical school to complete and MD and practice medicine. I also love to teach and have done so for more than 20 years in various ways.

Music Theory

I was raised in a musical family and have been playing piano since I was 7 years old and have added electric bass and dulcimer as an adult. I have completed four semesters of music theory as well as song writing and MIDI instrumentation classes. I routinely play bass with a band where I help with arrangements, transitions, and other musical ideas.

Physiology

I completed a BS degree in chemistry and biology, and a MD in Family practice. I have several years experience teaching and mentoring high school and college student.

Dr. Debbie taught our young daughter about the human body and gave her a fun, engaging homework assignment that has made the rounds through our entire family. Looking forward to the next lesson.
