Galina sets up an initial appointment in somewhere open like a bookstore so that everyone can feel comfortable. From the first lesson she asks you a few questions (in Russian) to get an idea of your level. There's the ability of a tutor to look at something written in their language and tell you what is wrong with it, or that it is wrong. But, then there is a tutor who knows their language enough to explain it to someone else. Why was it wrong, what are multiple ways it can be changed to be correct, and so on. Galina can do this. She can explain to you in ways you understand why something in Russian is the way it is.
She is very patient and easy to work with, but not in the sense that you can get away with anything. No, with Galina, you feel the expectation to do your work, and to do it well (why would you get a tutor if you didn't expect to try to see this though?). If I ever need a Russian tutor in Sacramento again, I will not hesitate to send Galina another message to see if she is available.
Thank you very much for your feedback. I was happy to work with Marie on mastering her Russian. She was always prepared for the class, and she enjoyed studying Russian. I wish her the best in her future studies, and a great experience at the summer school.
Her teaching background shows. She is patient, knowledgeable, and very helpful on pronunciation issues. I look forward to further lessons with Galina.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
