About Mike

I did my undergraduate work at Shasta Bible College and The Master’s College. It was at Shasta Bible College that I received my B.A. in Bible and Theology. I knew even before I graduated, however, that I desired to attend seminary. For the past three years I’ve been working on two M.A. degrees at Westminster Seminary California. My first M.A. is in Biblical studies, and the second in Theological Studies.

Throughout my entire education I have had small opportunities to teach Bible lessons, either in a formal church setting, or in the college dormitories. My heart’s desire, and what is most rewarding for me as a person, is to teach individuals and groups, either young or old (or somewhere in between) about the Bible’s greatly textured account of God’s saving acts in Jesus Christ. Having written numerous academic papers for school, I'm also prepared to help stir up creativity and craft and edit essays or papers.

Through the seven years of education I’ve received, I feel equipped and eager to teach lessons on the biblical books, systematic theology (what the whole Bible has to say about a topic; e.g., God), Greek, Hebrew, and even apologetics and philosophy. After a short break from the rigors of the academic life, I do intend on pursuing PhD studies that I might teach at a Christian college or university.

Please feel free to contact me regarding what kinds of lessons you might be interested in! If you have a particular idea not mentioned above, though having to do with the Bible or theology, please let me know. I'd love to share the things I've learned these last seven years, and continue to learn even since graduation. Perhaps we can even learn something together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies. I have two Masters degrees, one in Biblical Studies, and the other in Theological studies, from an accredited, academically rigorous graduate institution. I've been accepted into post-graduate studies on these areas of study by Edinburgh University. I have had academic references written on my behalf from the seminary I've attended.

Greek

I've had 4 years of Greek language training in college and during seminary. I've spent entire semesters translating and making comments on a particular passage's grammar, syntax, and vocabulary (e.g., how is this aorist participle functioning). I've also, numerous times, incorporated Greek word studies and Greek syntax into academic papers to support an argument I was giving. I intend on studying Greek the rest of my natural life.

Philosophy

During my undergraduate years, I took up a personal interest in the history of philosophy, especially Existentialism, philosophy of religion, and epistemology. While working on my Masters degrees, I was exposed to and able to thoughtfully engage all kinds of philosophy in history courses, from the pre-Socratics to Derrida. As an enduring interest of mine, I hope to share those things that I've learned in the past, and are continuing to learn through self-study.

Reading

For the last 7 years I've been required to read some very academic, dense writings. Because of exams and papers which relate to the assigned reading, I've learned reading skills that have allowed me to read both carefully and critically (and sometimes in other languages!). Having gone to school with many international students, I've also had the opportunity to help some of them understand texts better, whether they need clarification regarding terminology, syntax, grammar, or concepts.

Religion

I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject because I have been learning about ultimate issues and the various answers to them in a formal academic setting for the last 7 years. Though specifically trained in biblical studies and Christian theology, I was required to read primary sources and interact with those who held religious committments differing from my own. Finally, extracurricular readings of mine have included philosophers from all kinds of religious backgrounds (atheists, pantheists, deists, etc.).

Writing

Having worked on two M.A. degrees, I've had to write numerous academic papers, papers which were subject to the utmost scrutiny. The graduate institution I attended had many foreign students which I was able to help along the way, even in tutoring. This subject goes hand in hand with Biblical studies.
