I received a lifetime teaching certificate when I got my degree but joined the navy and spent most of my career on aircraft carriers. I was an air combat instructor at TOPGUN and also at the USN F-14 Tomcat training squadron. I taught high school history to Sailors on the USS Kitty Hawk. I spent much of my 32 year career mentoring my Sailors and young officers and watching them grow and progress. I retired from the navy as a 2 star admiral and was president of a small IT company in San Diego. I was in a position to mentor many of those young people as well.
I have a good background in history and political science from reading and textbooks and am an avid consumer (and student) of news from a variety of sources. I have been able to visit and work with people from all over the world and so my perspective is comprehensive and based on more than what I have read. I approach politics from a non partisan stance and use facts to explore the political scene more than emotion.
I have had the opportunity to do many things, contact many cultures, work with high levels of the military, our government and foreign governments and believe I can bring value to my students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I minored in political science in college and my MPA from George Washington connected politics with the philosophy, metrics, and program challenges of public administration. The military is an extension of our political system and as a senior military officer I played a role in the political connection to various programs. As director of operations for European Command I engaged in and provided stewardship of various political challenges of our European and African allies. I made it a career of being very, very attentive to political issues without introducing my own personal thoughts and bias. That might be the most important qualification.
