About Debra

I have worked in the field of education as a substitute teacher since 2000 and as a fully credentialed Education Specialist since 2012. I genuinely enjoy working with students one-on-one because I can prepare curriculum and utilize teaching strategies that can effectively and efficiently serve the best needs of my students. Working one-on-one with students allows me to respond more immediately to their unique needs and provide greater opportunities for success.

I offer tutoring services in Language Arts, Reading, Writing, and Spelling. I am qualified as an Education Specialist to work with students whose secondary language is English. My Education Specialist credential prepared me to work with students with special needs including certified training to work with students with Autism.

I ask for a 24 hour notice of cancellation. However, in the case of an emergency I will work with you to schedule another appointment. In this way I can offer optimum and consistent tutoring session dates and times. Thank you.

I prefer working with students at a local library. However, if meeting at the library is challenging then we can discuss alternative arrangements. Thank you.

I look forward to meeting you and to get started on our road to success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

Common Core has been instituted within the public schools throughout California. As a practicing substitute teacher I teach curriculum that is aligned with Common Core standards. Teaching primarily elementary students in several school districts provides me with varied and rich experiences and opportunities to master Common Core standards and teaching strategies.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a credentialed Education Specialist I am certified to work with students K-22 years of age. As a practicing substitute teacher I work primarily with elementary school age students. As a resource specialist teacher, I worked with elementary, middle and high school students.

Handwriting

Handwriting is a fundamental and primary skill for early grade elementary students to master. I am qualified to teach handwriting because of my college education, graduate and undergraduate work that required extensive and excellent writing skills. I acquired my Education Specialist Instruction Credential, Moderate/Severe from San Diego State University in 2012.

Special Needs

As a credentialed Education Specialist I am certified to work with special needs students K-22 years of age. As a practicing substitute teacher I work primarily with elementary school age students. As a resource specialist teacher I worked with elementary, middle and high school students.
