I am a certified California teacher with a Multiple Subject Credential and Single Subject Credentials in Mathematics and English with ESL authorization. I have been a private tutor for several years and have had students and parents tell me that I was the first tutor that made a difference in their education, that helped them to understand difficult concepts and/or fully prepared them to take an important exam.
I have worked with students who speak English as a second language and students with learning disabilities such as ADHD.
My teaching style is all about helping my students understand the material from the inside out through discussion and critical thinking strategies, so that when I'm not there they will still understand the material and know how to succeed. This is achieved through critical questioning and thinking strategies as I help my students answer their own questions by analyzing the problems logically and/or looking at them from another angle.
Sometimes I demonstrate an important point by giving my students an example and asking them to apply what they just learned to their own lives or work. Critical thinking and analysis skills are essential for long term success and will help the student to succeed in all areas of their education. I actively encouraging my students to think critically and ask questions; to that end, I am extremely patient, kind and motivated to see my students succeed.
I differentiate my lessons to meet each of my students' specific learning goals through using their strengths and experiences. For SAT and ACT Test-Prep students, I teach critical test-taking strategies which maximize time usage and focus students' attention on key areas as well as offer in-depth knowledge as to how the tests are composed, scored and weighted.
My schedule is flexible and I am willing to meet my students where they feel comfortable. Nothing is more important to me than my student's success, and my students always leave my lessons feeling that they have learned something valuable. Thank you for reading my profile and I look forward to meeting you. Katie is a patient and experienced tutor who helps students not only master the material but understand the how and why of the subject matter. She asks insightful questions to get the students thinking about the steps to solve problems and does so in a comfortable and relaxed manner. My son looks forward to his time with Katie each week and knows when he has questions she will help him understand the concept with a smile on her face. With her guidance he has gotten strong A's on each test and aced his Algebra 2 final. She's fabulous!
Very patient and wonderful for my son who is studying for his SAT and ACT. Very accomodating with days and times.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a credentialed math teacher through a middle level program which means I am qualified to teach K-12 math with an emphasis in grades 6-8. I come from an extremely math-rich background and have worked with all kinds of students, teaching everything from basic algebra to calculus, with age ranges from 6th to 12th grade. I also teach SAT prep, critical thinking and analysis strategies.
As a math tutor of several years I have taught pre-calculus and calculus to a variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I help my students to succeed by teaching them critical learning strategies such as how to think logically about the concepts and scenarios being presented. As these skills are acquired classroom learning becomes streamlined into an organic process, decreasing frustration and often increasing grades across curriculum.
