Thank you for your time and interest! I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Berkeley and have been a full-time tutor since I graduated from college in 2009. The reason why I have been lucky enough to have been able to work full-time as tutor is that I retain my clients. I work with both high school and college level students.

Since I have a degree in math, I can tutor higher level mathematics courses, like Calculus I, II, II, business Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. You will not find me getting stuck on problems very often. And since I've been tutoring for so long, I have the experience necessary to communicate the concepts effectively. I also tutor other mathematics courses, like Pre-algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, and Pre-Cauclus.

My first experience tutoring was at Palomar College in 2006, while I was a student there. I was recruited by one of my professors to work for the school. My tutoring work at Palomar gave me a lot of experience tutoring students studying a variety of topics at a wide range of skill levels. I worked there until I transferred to Berkeley in 2007. After I graduated from Berkeley I immediately began tutoring again, but as a private in-home tutor. I passed the CSET mathematics subtest I & II in May 2010.

My teaching philosophy is simple. Students need to spend time learning their subject, and they need to workout their own homework problems. The tutor's job is to explain the material, do examples, and find holes in students' understanding. Mastery of a subject takes time and hard work. I help students by creating focus, which helps them use their study time efficiently, and by finding errors in students' work which helps stop bad habits from forming. I work with the students' own class material at their own pace. I watch the students work problems and see how they react to instruction and adjust my tutoring style accordingly.

Actuarial Science,

Actuarial Science

I have passed the Society of Actuaries exam P with a score of a 9, which means my performance on the exam was near perfect. Furthermore, I took math 440 at CSUSM, which more or less corresponds with the material on exam P and got a strong A. Lastly, my experience with the fundamentals--statistics and Calculus--makes be very well suited to tutor the material.
GRE,

GRE

I've taken the general GRE a total of three times so far, and I've developed study techniques that have proven to be effective. In my most recent attempt at the GRE I scored a 167 on the quantitative section, which put me in about the 95 percentile range. I also have a lot of experience as a math tutor more generally, so you can count on me being able to explain the concepts effectively. As of now, I only tutor the quantitative section.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

My mathematics background has made well primed to learn Excel, and I frequently use the less sophisticated spreadsheet features. Recently, I decided to "beef-up" on my Excel my taking the Infinite Actuaries' "Technical Skills" course, where I studied Excel's more complicated functionality, e.g. VLookup, VBA, and pivot columns. I may be willing to discount my price, depending on my availability and your location, because I would like to keep my Excel skills fresh.

Calculus,

Calculus

I majored in math as a student, and took the entire Calculus series, and I received A's in all my classes. So you can rely on the fact that I know the material well. You won't find me spending half the time in your book, or frequently getting stuck on problems. Furthermore, I've been a full-time tutor since I graduated in 2009 and I see Calculus students all the time; usually about a third of my clientele are studying Calculus. That means you can count on me to communicate concepts well.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is a source of frustration for many students, because it's not like other math that you see in high school. And everybody has to take it. The good news, at least for you, is that that means qualified tutors, like myself, see Geometry all the time, and know how to tutor it. I usually have two or more Geometry students at any given time, and I've been tutoring since I graduated in 2009. So you can count on me knowing this stuff inside and out, and that I can teach it.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I'm particularly well suited to tutor precalculus, because precalculus tends to be a more advanced version of all the math you've learned before with an emphasis on the tools you'll need for Calculus plus some trigonometry. I tutor Calculus, trigonometry, and less advanced math classes all the time and I'm good at it. You won't find me getting stuck on problems very often or getting definitions mixed up. All our time will be spent teaching, and I have a lot of experience doing just that.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

This is one of my favorite topics to tutor. I love working with more advanced math class, like Trigonometry. And I see it all the time. For example, in summer 2009 I had two Trigonometry students. You'll find that there are a lot of ways to solve Trig problems, some easier than others. Over the years I've found a lot of the easier techniques to solve the problems, and I've developed intuition about where students tend to struggle.

Awesome Tutor

My daughter really liked her session with Charles. He was able to break down the problems in a way that was easy for my daughter to understand. I would highly recommend his services.

Great tutor!

My daughter and her friend both ended up with A's in Calculus thanks to Charles! He's a great guy and has a lot of patience.

Great at explaining difficult material.

Charles is great at helping my son who's a high school senior taking Calculus at a local junior college. The material has become very complex and challenging for my son. Charles does a great job of breaking it down and helping my son understand not only the processes involved but the reasoning as well.

Great tutor! Smart, patient, and reliable!

Charles is an amazing math teacher. Note “teacher,” not just tutor. He is much better at explaining math concepts than my professor was. Charles demonstrated time and again that not only did he know more about the subject than my professor, but he was able to clearly explain how to solve the problems no matter how hard. I have tried Calculus II three times, across two colleges, and Charles is the one who helped me pass it the fourth time in only 6 weeks! A great tutor, I would recommend him to anyone.

Very knowledgeable.

Charles was very helpful in helping our daughter in AP Calc. He helped her understand some of the problem solving skills she was lacking. We only could use him once as due to his schedule was so full.
