I have been tutoring Math and Science for over 30 years in Oklahoma, New Jersey as well as here in California. I take some time to get to learn about my students likes/dislikes so that I can relate the lessons to their interests or background. I like to use things they are familiar with to teach them the applications of the laws of math and science. I have always been successful if the student listens and is honest with me. Most of my students go from failing to making A or B. Please call me to see if your student can learn to enjoy math/science or at least get the grade they deserve.
My philosophy: My grandmother taught me it was rude to brag on your successes, therefore the idea of talking about me is difficult. I do believe that when a child is struggling with schoolwork there is a lot of stress on the whole family unit. I talk with the child about their interests and their strengths so I can build a program for each individual to become successful. I have found in many cases in as little as five or six sessions, there is a tremendous reduction in stress on the family, so if you as a parent are feeling at wits end, please contact me and see if life can become more enjoyable. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring Algebra 1 for over 30 years. Most of my students end up with A's.
While in High School I was a one-on-one mentor/tutor for children who were falling behind in reading. In addition to that I have volunteered for several years, most of the time one day a week with my daughters' classes, where I would review reading, grammar, and math problems with the students in a one-on-one or one-on-two setting. Many of these students were able to catch up to the rest of the class.
I have worked with study groups to set up questions on subject matter. I taught note taking to kids in Boy Scouts. I have taught people how to break down problems to find the root of things and then develop a solution. My style of tutoring is to show the student how various things interact so even though it might be a word problem, I make sure their English skills are up to speed.
