About Cynthia

I have been a credentialed teacher for over 30 years. I have earned two Masters degrees and a Doctorate in Literacy Studies, which means that I am a specialist in reading skills, comprehension, grammar, writing essays, editing papers and theses. I have taught many students with ADD, LD, and other learning challenges. Some of the students I have worked with were failing school when they came to me and by much hard work they passed their classes and even achieved "B" averages. I am a credentialed Learning Specialist, so I teach using different modalities. I have taught the SAT for over 18 years with great success.

I have been the director of three learning centers, volunteered in juvenile hall, worked with many at-risk students, and I am a spiritual person. I expect the best from my students and I support their academic efforts in any way that I can. I want my students to have the skills and self-esteem to be successful in school and later in life. I know that reading is the foundation for any progress in school and any missing skills that a student needs are provided by me before they go on to the next level.

I am very passionate about teaching, as I have always loved this profession even when I taught the most difficult students whether in regular ed.,special ed., public, private schools or college. I am dedicated, professional, warm, reliable, and caring and I have high standards. I have dedicated and devoted my life to my students as they are our future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taught phonics to first graders and second graders for 10 years. I also have taught phonics in grades preschool through high school and to some adults for many years. My doctoral dissertation which took 7 years to complete is in reading mastery, which includes phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, decoding skillsets.

I have a Master's Degree in Psychology and Counseling, which I have had for several years. I also was an MFCC intern for a year and I counseled many people as an intern.

I have a Lifetime Elementary Teaching Credential in K-8; a Masters Degree in Education, a Learning Specialist Credential, and a Doctorate in Literacy.

I have had great success with struggling students and those who need patient care to achieve their goals.

I have been studying the Bible for many years and I have taken many classes on religion. I also was a teaching Catholic nun for 15 years, in which I taught religion every school day to many different grades. I pray every day, as I have for many, many years.

Special Needs

I have a Masters Degree in Special Education and a Learning Handicapped Credential. I taught students that were EMR, MR, LD, Autistic, and had deficits in auditory and visual memory for several years in public, county, and private schools. I have also taught gifted students in various settings.

Study Skills

Since I am a Learning Specialist, I know that value and teach the value of study skills, which include: being organized, sticking to a schedule, having your books and study aids (pencils sharpened, pens, paper, notebooks, assignments written in a scheduler) near your quiet, calm study area with few distractions. Organization is important in school and in any walk of life.
I have taught many students study skills.

I have a minor and almost a major in Zoology and Biology, which means that I have 16 credits in these two fields. I have tutored many students in these two subjects with much success. I have taught both subjects. I believe that both subjects require memorization of key vocabulary terms, understanding life cycles such a mitosis and meiosis, and understanding how the animal kingdom evolved from the one-celled organisms to the mammals and the homo sapiens.
