Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to my Bachelor of Arts in Theology, I completed all coursework for Elementary Education. I participated in long-term, intensive labs, teaching struggling students Math and Science. Further, I tutored remedial, grade-level, and advanced Reading. My student-teaching was completed in two settings: a fourth-grade contained classroom in which I taught all subjects, and seventh-and-eighth-grade Social Studies and Language Arts single-subject classes.

My approach is absolutely student-centered. I observe closely to ascertain the pupil's unique learning style, and from here design instruction to fit his or her unique qualities. This allows me to help bolster the learner's strengths and address difficulties. Every child has strengths. The best instruction will elicit those strengths to elevate areas of need. This enhances the student's sense of empowerment, while improving his or her performance.

I have repeatedly facilitated breakthroughs for learners of every grade.

English

Exposure to English via a multitude of reading and writing styles across many genres has given me a superior grasp of the language: its rules, conventions, and nuances. I hold a B.A. in Theology, with a minor in Philosophy. I further completed all coursework for a B.A. in Elementary Education, with an emphasis on Middle School Literature. But none of that is of use to a learner if my experience does not come with a gift for teaching.

It is my joy and honor to teach all subsets of the subject of English, from Reading, Writing, and Grammar, to Literature, including comprehension, retention, and written response.

I work with beginning, intermediate, and advanced students at every level of proficiency. In each case, I closely observe the learner, identifying strengths, learning styles, and difficulties. I then design instruction to fit his or her specific needs. And I refuse to let English be boring!

Grammar

Spoken grammar comes naturally to most. Applying this awareness to English assignments and writing projects can be a very different matter. My gift as a tutor is that I will identify, quite quickly, your learner's gaps between verbal usage and the written identification and application of grammatical principles. Lessons will build on your student's strengths, leading to understanding and mastery of English grammar.

Philosophy

I possess a minor in Philosophy, as well as a major in Theology (wherein Philosophical readings abound) from Creighton University, one of the country's best Liberal Arts universities. Mastering a Philosophy course requires attention to minutiae in every reading. By teaching you a step-by-step "break it down" approach, I will help you comprehend the tomes, treatises, and essays that can seem overwhelmingly dense and daunting.

Prealgebra

In addition to completion of my K-8 teaching coursework, I have tutored many students in pre-Algebra, including my youngest son. (When I home-schooled my 8th-grader in pre-Algebra for one school year, he caught up with 3 years of failed Math, to achieve a 56/60 on his placement test for high school.)

Algebra is the language of Math. Moving a learner from basic facts to conceptual relationships in pre-Algebra requires attention to each student's learning style and method of processing. Many times, a very bright student becomes mystified with this transition. It is my gift and joy to closely observe the learner's form of processing and quickly develop an individualized system that soon sees the student internalizing pre-Algebra concepts and successfully completing assignments and tests.

Reading

I have the ability to quickly and thoroughly identify an individual reader's strengths and needs. Reading comprehension and interpretation come via different mental routes for different readers. My instruction helps the student internalize strategies for mastering fluency and retention of content. I am versed in the classics and pop-lit, and have even utilized comic books to facilitate reading development. From early to experienced, readers whom I teach will receive instruction designed specifically for their needs. And, it will be fun.

Religion

I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Theology from Creighton University. My g.p.a. in the major was 3.8. I have read extensively on many subjects within the field, as well as attended numerous lectures and seminars. My concentration is in Judeo-Christian Theology and I also have ample exposure to World Religions.

SAT Reading

In addition to having helped my own children master AP English and SAT Reading, I have an ability to identify an individual learner's strengths and areas of need. Reading comprehension and interpretation come via different mental routes for different readers. My instruction helps the college-bound student hone his or her best attack for the content and style presented on college aptitude exams. And, I make it fun.

SAT Writing

SAT writing requires that the test-taker's ideas flow from beginning, to middle, to end and that they be presented coherently and correctly, from grammar to word-choice to punctuation; to the expression of exposition, opinions, and themes. By attending to the specific strengths and needs of each student, I help the college-bound writing student grow in proficiency, clarity, and expression. While the inclusion of a main idea, examples, supporting statements, and a strong conclusion are the building-blocks of a good SAT essay, I can show your learner how to master the expressive style and proper self-editing to achieve a superior score.

Writing

Creative writing, reports, essays, and reviews; research papers, position papers, term papers, and more: what do they all have in common? Each endeavor requires that the ideas flow from beginning, to middle, to end. Each must be presented coherently and correctly, from grammar to word-choice to punctuation; to the expression of themes, theses and hypotheses. By attending to the specific strengths and needs of each student, I help individual learners grow in proficiency, clarity, and expression. The student's new skills and mastery will be utilized for current assignments and can be applied to any future genre or form in which they are required to write.
