Tutoring largely started out as a hobby for me. I enjoyed helping my fellow classmates learn material and be successful while at the same time learning from them. That cooperative nature of tutoring, working together to achieve student-inspired goals, is what turned it into a passion.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Washington with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and Economics. As a math department tutor, I was given the opportunity to help college students of all levels, from basic college math to upper division courses and statistics. I have also done private tutoring for the last ten years with all ages, ranging from elementary students to adults. I am comfortable tutoring any level of math, including test prep, as well as economics.

My teaching philosophy is simple: you get out what you put in. Lessons will be structured based on the idea of student-driven learning. This means that students will be encouraged to develop clear goals, and we will work to achieve those goals based on a learning framework that will involve hands-on and real world examples. Students will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. Tutoring is supposed to help students achieve success with the work they already have, not create more work for them unnecessarily.

I strive to be flexible when it comes to scheduling sessions. I have a 24-hour in advance cancellation policy, but I offer make-up sessions and rescheduling. I am willing to travel to the student or to an agreed upon neutral location.

Please feel free to contact me for further information, to schedule sessions, or to see if I am the right fit for you. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a Bachelor's of Science double major in Mathematics and Economics. At Puget Sound, I was a math department tutor specializing in all college math courses, including statistics and econometrics. I also spent a year in an Economics Ph.D. program at the University of Oregon where I was an instructor for Friday classes for both Micro and Macroeconomics. I have completed statistics research as part of an REU program at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Statistics

As a tutor and a holder of an economics and mathematics bachelor's degree, statistics has been a major focus of my studies and practice. I have conducted research in statistics as part of a National Science Foundation REU grant as well as completed a statistics driven economics thesis. In my tutoring, I have helped both high school and college students succeed in Statistics of all levels, from introductory courses to advanced courses such as linear statistical models, math statistics, and probability theory.

Common Core

Common Core

In California, common core state testing is done with the SBAC (also called the CAASPP). In the spring and summer of 2015, I served as a test grader for the CAASPP and was eventually promoted to the position of scoring leader. As a grader, I was required to be very familiar with the Common Core standards and the test structure. As a scoring leader, I actively coached and supported test graders, leading to an intimate knowledge of Common Core testing and how to explain it to others.

Best teacher!

Matthew thoroughly explains topics to make sure you have a solid understanding and has a lot of patience. He makes difficult concepts seem easy with his teaching style. After several sessions, I highly recommend getting tutored by him.

Great & effective stats tutor! Highly recommend him

My daughter had her first lesson with Matthew and found it the most effective lesson thus far. She has had prior tutors but Matthew was the only one who was prepared to not only walk through her questions with her but ensure that she herself understood the concepts. He asked her to explain her problem solving process which helped her realize why she scored incorrectly on a previous quiz. He also presented additional questions on her class topics for her to solve which reinforced her understanding. She ended up acing her stats exam the next day. Aside from an air of mystery (since it was audio based), she learned a lot from Matthew. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for an effective, patient, kind, and knowledgeable stats tutor.

Great tutor!

Matthew helped me understand concepts in my intermediate microeconomics course. He comes to the lesson already prepared to work on problems you send to him, which I really appreciated. He's knowledgeable and nice!

Awesome Tutor

If you need a tutor this is the guy. He helped me with my econometrics class and I actually understood what he was saying since he took his time and helped break down the concepts in simple terms for me to understand. He helped me so much more in two hours than my professor did this whole quarter.
