Tutoring largely started out as a hobby for me. I enjoyed helping my fellow classmates learn material and be successful while at the same time learning from them. That cooperative nature of tutoring, working together to achieve student-inspired goals, is what turned it into a passion.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Washington with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and Economics. As a math department tutor, I was given the opportunity to help college students of all levels, from basic college math to upper division courses and statistics. I have also done private tutoring for the last ten years with all ages, ranging from elementary students to adults. I am comfortable tutoring any level of math, including test prep, as well as economics.

My teaching philosophy is simple: you get out what you put in. Lessons will be structured based on the idea of student-driven learning. This means that students will be encouraged to develop clear goals, and we will work to achieve those goals based on a learning framework that will involve hands-on and real world examples. Students will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. Tutoring is supposed to help students achieve success with the work they already have, not create more work for them unnecessarily.

I strive to be flexible when it comes to scheduling sessions. I have a 24-hour in advance cancellation policy, but I offer make-up sessions and rescheduling. I am willing to travel to the student or to an agreed upon neutral location.

Please feel free to contact me for further information, to schedule sessions, or to see if I am the right fit for you. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Statistics

As a tutor and a holder of an economics and mathematics bachelor's degree, statistics has been a major focus of my studies and practice. I have conducted research in statistics as part of a National Science Foundation REU grant as well as completed a statistics driven economics thesis. In my tutoring, I have helped both high school and college students succeed in Statistics of all levels, from introductory courses to advanced courses such as linear statistical models, math statistics, and probability theory.

Common Core

In California, common core state testing is done with the SBAC (also called the CAASPP). In the spring and summer of 2015, I served as a test grader for the CAASPP and was eventually promoted to the position of scoring leader. As a grader, I was required to be very familiar with the Common Core standards and the test structure. As a scoring leader, I actively coached and supported test graders, leading to an intimate knowledge of Common Core testing and how to explain it to others.

So grateful

Matthew is incredibly patient with my children, and they learn more from him than from the teacher giving them the homework. He has a gift for making things very clear. We are very grateful for him.

Patient and Easy to Follow Tutor

I sought Matthew’s help for my daughter who has fallen behind in her HS junior level Math. She has received extra help from the school tutors and her teacher and they still couldn’t break the concepts down in a way she could understand. After her first session with Matthew she said she “totally gets it now” and he explained it in such a “patient & easy to understand way” that she didn’t have any problems grasping the concepts. She said she was still a little hung up on one thing but he was so patient she didn’t “feel dumb having to ask him to explain something again”. The session went so well that we have him booked out for the rest of the week in preparation for finals and I intend to keep having 1-2 weekly sessions with him just to help her from falling behind the rest of the school year. Matthew is also very quick to respond and has a pretty open schedule. I can definitely see why past students/parents have rated him so high!

Wow, absolutely amazing!

Matt is exactly what I needed. He had me understanding years of forgotten economics/algebra after one session. He helps you through the process and in the end you understand everything - signs of a great teacher. Matt, I appreciate all of your help! Totally worth the money! If you are on the fence and can't decide on if you need a tutor, or if you're trying to pick between the thousands of tutors, stop right now and just choose Matt - he's awesome!

Awesome Tutor

I started tutoring with Matthew a few weeks into my Algebra 2 course & I was completely lost & drowning quickly in the course... Without Matthews help I would be failing the course & doomed to taking it a 2nd time... Matthew is very knowledgeable in all concepts of Algebra & is able to explain them with ease & understanding... I highly recommend Matthew as a tutor in Algebra 2!!
