About Michael

I am a partner at Ascendance Strategies, a political and international security consulting firm based in Los Angeles. I earned Master of Public Policy degree specializing in International Relations and Economics from Pepperdine University School of Public Policy. My master's thesis, titled "A Security Strategy for the United States of America: Interests Concerning the Russian Federation" was published by ProQuest and distributed to the Library of Congress, university libraries nationwide, and for free online. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a specialization in Politics and Government from California State University, Northridge. While attending CSUN, I led the Model United Nations delegation to win Outstanding Delegation and Outstanding Position Papers awards at both international conferences in New York and Washington, D.C. I have previously worked as a counter-terrorism researcher and international security analyst at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel. Between receiving my undergraduate and graduate studies, I served as a mediator at the Center of Civic Mediation at the LA County Bar Association.

I am an experienced global security, political and economic analyst with a solid background in international relations, counter-terrorism, economics and research analysis. As a certified mediator, I facilitate conflict resolution between disagreeing parties. I communicate effectively with clients and team-members. I have expertise in providing excellent service to customers and peers, validating quality assurance, and effectively utilizing benchmarks, metrics and quantitative analysis. While I do not have much experience tutoring, I am very interested in the work. I believe that my professional and academic experience - along with my history of working as a leadership counselor to high school seniors for the past 12 years - will allow me to help my tutoring clients get ahead in a number of fields. I am excited to begin tutoring high school and college students.

I am confident that I will provide quality public speaking and writing tutoring because of my experience. Along with having my master's thesis published, I have authored a book for a client's internal distribution. These projects involved months of research, analysis, and composition. I have also been successful conducting research and analysis with a short turn-around time when a product/assignment is needed in just a few days. Upon request, I can provide a number of writing samples to interested clients to demonstrate my written capability.

I can coach my clients on composing a solid written argument and presenting it effectively in public. In venues ranging from Model UN to debates, several keys to success in public speaking are having confidence in your argument with various supporting facts that will resonate with the audience, practice speaking under timed conditions and making eye contact with the audience, and developing responses to anticipated counter-arguments. With sufficient practice and preparation, anyone can become comfortable at the podium and perform well in front of a crowd. I know I can help my clients reach this goal.

My BA and MPP degrees have given me significant experience analyzing public policy, government structure, political organization and strategy, political philosophy, and the formation and evolution of the American political system. I specialize in international affairs and security, geo-politics, and U.S. foreign policy. I founded a consulting firm, worked at an Israeli thinktank, and received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of international security and politics because I am passionate about these subjects. I am eager to provide guidance on these topics to my clients.

In 2003, I was a starter on the Santa Monica Beach Club (SMBC) 16-1 team. We placed 5th at Junior Olympics in Phoenix, AZ. The following year, as the starting libero for the SMBC 17-1 team, we placed 7th at Junior Olympics in Austin, TX. My high school team at Viewpoint set the California record of victories to begin a season in 2005 as we went 30-0 and won the CIF-SS Division V Championship undefeated. Playing opposite, I led the Viewpoint team in kills and was named 1st Team All CIF-SS Division V.

I was fortunate to be coached by top-level college and professional volleyball players such as Scott Wong (current men's assistant coach at Pepperdine), Tom Black (current women's head coach at LMU), and Andrew Vazquez (club founder and owner at Elite VBC). Recently I have begun 1-on-1 coaching for adults and junior boys club players. I am in discussions to begin coaching a junior boys club team. I am well versed on the fundamentals and the intricacies of volleyball strategy. I greatly enjoy coaching as I have a deep passion for the game. Please contact me if you, your friend or family member wants to elevate their game for greater success at the club, varsity or junior varsity level.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my profile. I am eager to tutor clients on the areas that I am passionate about. I believe that this passion - combined with my education and experience - will translate to a productive and enjoyable tutoring session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I earned a Master of Public Policy degree specializing in International Relations and Economics from Pepperdine University School of Public Policy. My studies focused on geopolitics, counter-terrorism, U.S. foreign policy, U.S. Security Strategy, statistical modeling, econometric analysis, Middle East politics, international affairs, homeland security, emergency management, domestic terrorism prevention, counter-insurgency, international arms control, policy analysis, and economics.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a specialization in Politics and Government from California State University, Northridge. My studies focused on international law, U.S. foreign policy, the politics of Europe, Latin America, and South America, U.S. government agencies, programs and operations, political theory and philosophy, public policy analysis, and Chinese history.

Public Speaking

I have significant experience speaking before large audiences during my undergraduate and graduate education. At Pepperdine I took part in a weekly foreign policy roundtable discussion for a crowd of 60+ people. At Model United Nations conferences, I delivered timed presentations to crowds of over 400 people. I was judged based on my performance at the podium and my ability to caucus in smaller groups to convince other of the mutual benefit of adopting my policies.

My accolades at these conferences are evidence of my public speaking ability: I was awarded "Outstanding Delegation - The 2010 National Model United Nations - Washington, D.C. Conference" by The National Collegiate Conference Association and The Osgood Center for International Studies for my representation of the Republic of Senegal in the General Assembly Second Committee as part of the delegation from CSUN. At the subsequent international conference, I was awarded "Outstanding Delegation - The 2011 National Model United Nations - New York Conference" by The National Collegiate Conference Association for my representation of the Hellenic Republic in the General Assembly Third Committee as part of the delegation from CSUN.
