About James

My name is James, but all my students call me Jim. I know how painful it is to fail and the deep and the abiding satisfaction that comes with academic success. My students never fail. My students always succeed because I know how learning really works and I can teach you. I can teach you how to succeed quickly, permanently, and in every academic subject.

I don't care what your past performance has been and I don't care what anyone else has told you. I know you can succeed. Furthermore, I know that you can succeed right away. Your aim is not to get by, your aim is not to merely survive school, your aim is to excel and to excel at every subject. I know you can do it. I have rescued students from the toughest situations you can imagine. My degree is in Experimental Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience from UC San Diego. I have impeccable credentials from the foremost learning researchers in the world (available on request) and testimonials from parents and students from elementary school through high school.

My techniques are based on Nobel Prize winning research. They are solid. They work every time and they will work for you. I especially enjoy working with students that are in jeopardy, students that everyone has given up on, students that feel like giving up on themselves.

The Universe has been around for about 15 billion years and in all that time it has created only one of you. You are special, there will never be anyone else like you, you deserve to live a worthwhile and productive life. It can start right now and I would be honored to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD is a disorder whose etiology and treatment, despite numerous claims of expertise,is not well understood and only nebulously defined.

It is generally diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist by the administration of drugs with various brand names. Despite the variety of names for these drugs, they are basically all the same. They are amphetamine.

Amphetamine is a dopamine and epinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Its long term effects are, at this time, unknown. What is known is this. These drugs, prescribed to children, are exactly the same drugs that would land an adult who possessed them without a prescription, in prison. Common sense would dictate that caution be exercised.

Since the drugs are considered to be harmful enough to society to attach a felony conviction to their unauthorized possession, what is the nature of the harm they are proposed to alleviate?

Drug treatment for ADHD is primarily a treatment of convenience for parents and teachers, and only secondarily as a benefit to the student. Consequently, if the student's academic performance can be improved, the drug administration might be lessened or eliminated.

As a child I suffered from this disorder long before there was a name for it. I do not wish that experience on anyone.

Consequently, I will tutor any student so diagnosed at a reduced rate, as it is the approach to study rather than the subjects themselves that need to be addressed, and the parents, should they be satisfied, may pay me whatever bonus they may feel is fair.

I am available to discuss this with any concerned parent and am comfortable doing so online via Skype or Yahoo IM.

I have a strong academic background in every phase of biology, from cell biology to neuroscience. I was an A student in biology at UCSD and love to teach it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an expert in the academic development of elementary school academic performance. I have developed award winning programs for the City of San Diego and the Boys and Girls Clubs. I have impeccable credentials and endorsements.

I have 10 years of experience with K-6 students. The bulk of this experience has been pro bono. The program I developed for the City of San Diego benefited the K-6 residents at a city owned low-income apartment complex.

My students were so astonishingly successful that they gained attention from the elementary school they attended and were invited to be the guests of the faculty of the nearby Salk Institute for Biological Research, the world's foremost campus for molecular biology. There they were personally hosted by Nobel Laureate Dr. Roger Guillemin. My student's are invariably successful.

I have a degree in Experimental Psychology from UCSD. I also have a strong academic background in neuroscience and scored a 97% on the Functional Neuroanatomy final.

Besides a thoroughgoing knowledge of psychology and neuroscience I am an expert learning specialist with impeccable credentials from the foremost authorities in the field. Consequently, my students not only get timely help in the specifics of the subject I teach them how to approach any subject with a methodical certainty of success.

Study Skills

For the past ten years I have been successfully teaching students how to learn. Study skills are among the least understood of the academic arts.

This deficiency is the primary source of academic failure. My study methods produce learning as an inevitable result of their practice. They are applicable to any academic learning task.

These methods are scientifically sound. They are based on the work of Dr. Eric Kandel who was awarded the Nobel Prize for elucidating the biological nature of all human learning.

I have been teaching these methods for the past 10 years to every manner of student with uniform success. For the WyzAnt reviewer, I would be happy to provide impeccable reference with regard to these methods from one of the world's foremost researchers as well as referrals from any of my numerous successful students.

A good fit — I'm writing this review for my son. He is a junior in high school and has an IEP. In addition to needing much help and support for comprehension and processing issues, he struggles socially and has anxiety. Well, Jim was not only able to help him tackle the very difficult college prep biology course, but he also instilled a great deal of self-confidence boost and encouragement. My son grew to be q ...
