This enthusiastic PhD scientist/mom would love to help your K-12 son/daughter with their math and science. My professional degrees are in fields of biology but my passion is the pursuit and understanding of all areas of science. In 2010 I retired from 25 years in immunology research and biotech consulting in order to spend more time being a mom to my kids. As a bonus, I spend quite a bit of time doing homework with them and their classmates. Despite the emphasis to shift to common core curriculum, many children and teens are still faced with trying to memorize facts, phrases, and models without any real understanding of the concepts underlying them. Not only is this boring and meaningless for the student but incredibly frustrating as well. Because without an understanding, even closely related questions will stump them all over again. Central to my approach is getting your student to understand the foundations and grasp concepts in ways that are meaningful to them. It becomes a challenge they understand instead of meaningless memorization. More importantly, they are better prepared to meet similar challenges with insight and some sense of control instead of helpless befuddlement.
I am very familiar with the current elementary, middle, and high school curricula in EUSD and SDUHSD. I have tutored students in all subject areas at K-6 level, all mathematics and science subject areas for grades 6-8, and AP biology and other life science subjects at the high school level. Other science areas covered at grade levels 6-12 include earth sciences, natural sciences and introductory level physics and occasionally chemistry. Since my professional degrees are in the biological sciences I can tutor any high school, college and post-graduate level biology subject matter. Mary helped my daughter to organize her thoughts and use better studying and testing strategies for a multiple of topics for her AP Biology course. The workload for a college level course is intense and even more fast-paced when going to a high school that uses the quarter system so my daughter will hopefully successfully implement Mary's suggestions.
Mary quickly and correctly assessed that my daughter's math issues somewhat confident related. She was very nice and knowledgable. I think a weekly tutoring session with Mary will be very helpful.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored Elementary School students for four years. I set goals for students and ensure scholastic success in Science, Math, English Reading and Composition, and Independent Research Skills. This is accomplished by explaining and clarifying in ways the individual can relate, and advising in difficulty areas. Close communication with the parents is crucial for continued success in the student's work at home and school.
