I have over 20 years' teaching experience in Elementary Education and Adult ESOL classes. I have taught in
Florida, California, Hawaii, Minnesota and Washington State. My students like to learn with me because I have a lot of patience and like to see them succeed. I try to make each class easy and fun, and at the same time believe in repetition of subject material until the student definitely understands the material. I like to use analogies of situations I think the student is familiar with, such as sports, music, or even stories that make a point relevant to what we are learning. I truly enjoy helping students learn and understand what they need to know, and especially grades 1,2, and 3, because those are the foundation grades for reading, writing, and math, and I think once a student is proficient in the basics they can succeed anywhere. I also have many years of teaching ESOL, English to Speakers of Other Languages, on any age level. I speak enough Spanish to get by, includes reading. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's Degree in Human Resource Development from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. I have been teaching career guidance and counseling on a private tutor basis and am a guest teacher at a rehabilitation from drugs center in Hollywood, Florida, which ended when I moved to California. I have also attended classes in Human Resources in St. Paul, Minnesota.
I am certified in Elementary Education from the State of California at present, and have been certified in Florida when I lived there.
I am presently substituting in the Encinitas Union School District in California, and have been for four years. I also tutor at the Carlsbad Learning Center in ESL, and even though I missed some questions on the ESL test, I feel I am definitely qualified to teach ESL, and have been for over 20 years with great success.
