WyzAnt has recognized me, for the fourth year in a row, as one of their "Top 100 Tutors" out of more than 72,000 nationwide, based on my teaching experience and high ratings from students and parents. I have excellent mathematical skills, and am a very able teacher of English, ESL, US and European history, plus other subjects, and tend to bring student performance up by one or two letter grades.
My best strength as a teacher is listening very carefully to each individual student in order learn how to best aid his or her progress. Other strengths are good powers of exposition, demonstration, and resourcefulness.
My favorite thing about teaching is when a student solves a problem or has an idea. It is tremendously fulfilling for me to see that I helped with any step in scholastic achievement. I want the student to succeed.
I am a Shakespeare specialist.

My son has had a fantastic experience with Rebecca on many levels. Not only is she an accomplished teacher, easily demonstrated by her mastery of teaching subjects, Rebecca's commitment to his improvement has boosted his confidence and desire to learn. Rebecca offers a world view - a portal to a future my son is beginning to understand and one he, with Rebecca's guidance, controls. I very highly recommend Rebecca. Mid-term grades came out this week and I am happy to report that my son received 2 As and 4 Bs up from his grades in the middle of last term. Thank you Becky!
Alex is behind on English and Rebecca is helping very much and has been very flexible to adjust to his schedule.
Becky worked with my son, Nico intensively over the summer. I saw great improvements in his reading and writing ability. She was able to encourage and keep him motivated throughout the summer which is no easy task! Thank you Becky!
I loved my time tutoring with Rebecca as she is both encouraging and patient. She's taught be how to be confident and proud in my natural academic ability yet eager to work on my academic weaknesses.
Rebecca reviewed a document I had written and showed me where it needs improvement. I like that Rebecca is open and honest with my writing style and wants to help me.
Becky has been a blessing to our family. She is a dedicated, highly intelligent and caring soul that truly is a master at the art of teaching. Becky’s help and our son’s dedication allowed him to earn entrance into UCSB. I am not sure that he would have made it without her.
We first met Becky three years ago when she helped our son with his high school geometry class. Soon after we met Becky, we learned that she had a wealth of knowledge and is expert in many subjects. We then recruited her to help our son with many of his subjects. Without exception, soon after Becky started helping with a subject, the grades in that course improved. In time, our son was able to incorporate Becky’s study methods and apply them independently. Becky was a victim of her own success – our son no longer needed her. Becky could not have been happier for our son.
Sure enough, our daughter had trouble with geometry. Once again, we called Becky and the results repeated themselves. My daughter currently has an A in the course and will very likely conclude the year with an A.
Becky - Thank you. We are so much better for having met you. I am sure we will see you next year.
Becky accessed my sons challenges immediately and put him at ease and reassured him that he could master Geometry. At the end of the session I could tell my son understood it so much better. The next day when my son was doing review math problems he yelled "I'm so excited, I understand" We own all this to Becky!!!
She is the best tutor that I ever had. She is very passionate and patient when she teaches. You will never regret studying with her.
My son is already making progress after only a few sessions. He has gone from being totally frustrated to capable of tackling multiplication.
She has helped ensure my son is ready for his future. We love the results. It has been worth every penny. Thank you, Becky.
Understood my need in our very first meeting and guided me through to fulfill them exceeding my expectation. Now, I know where my problems are and how to improve.
Becky is a wonderful tutor! She is very knowledgeable, kind and patient. Becky truly cares about her students and their grasp of the material, and her ability to breakdown complex information is exceptional! My daughter enjoys working with Becky and looks forward to their study sessions. We are very fortunate to have found her!
Becky has inspired our son to perform admirably. She is patient and constructive, and she promotes his self-confidence and satisfaction in his work. His grades are already rising. We very much appreciate Becky!
Rebecca is extremely knowledgeable in European History. She is very easy to work with and has very flexible hours. She was thorough and patient during the lessons and I definitely plan on contacting her throughout the school year.
Very motivated and enthusiastic. Works hard. I have seen a huge improvement in my son's writing, math, and reading skills since working with Becky. Well worth the investment.
Rebecca is a wonderful tutor and a great person. She has helped my daughter immensely with her academics and we are very to have her into our home. We always feel very comfortable around her and we are looking forward to having her as a tutor next year.
We ended the year with 4 subjects with higher grades than they have been all year. Our son is happy and now motivated to continue to improve throughout the summer! Thank you Becky!
Excellent tutor for world history. My son is doing very well and as a parent also enjoyed listening in to the lesson.
Enjoy and learn!
Becky had a chance to tutor my teenage son. What stood out for us was that beyond being an excellent instructor with a natural gift for teaching who is both knowledgeable and professional, she exceeded our expectations by following up with additional suggestions and materials. In fact, as I'm writing this, I realize she exceeded our expectations in every area. Do not hesitate to use her if you want to help your child.
Rebecca is an excellent tutor. Any student at any level would be lucky to have her help! She is kind and patient and truly listens to her students needs!
Had a good start, Rebecca was prompt and was eager to help. This is a very difficult class so I hope to continue with her.
Becky is an outstanding tutor. She helped me with my essay and I was accepted into the college of my choice. She is kind, patient, and was able to meet my aggressive deadline. Thanks again Becky.
Becky is wonderful! She became my writing tutor during this summer. She was extremely patient and careful in going over every detail in my writings, helping me correct any mistakes she could find. With her help, I finally passed college writing requirement after failing for several times.
Becky also exchanged her writing experience with me, telling me useful information and interesting stories about western literature and writing, which I didn't know as an international student. Her positive encouragements also inspired my passion for literature and writing. I am glad to have her tutoring me.
Becky has been tutoring my high school son for 6 months now with excellent results. He was taking an overload of honors and AP courses, got poor teaching and really poor feedback from one public high school teacher, got behind in one subject and then it all snowballed. Becky was able to tutor him in all four academic subjects that were problematic, improving his grades, confidence, and approach to learning and studying. I like the way she 'unlocks' his abilities, showing him how to use resources and HOW to go about learning, not just drilling and lecturing. She has amazingly broad academic and global knowledge, and is able to inspire him by showing him how mastery of writing, foreign language and other subject are critical to professional/career accomplishments, not just high school subjects to survive. She is very patient, flexible as to time, easy to reach (text/phone/e-mail), and just a very gracious and interesting person as well. Really a great find for us!
My son has been struggling with learning to read. This was a very difficult thing for my wife and I as we just expected when the time came for our son to read that he would. So when we started to realize that he was not able to learn at the same pace as others this was a huge shock to us. With the help of teachers at his school we realized that our son has a form of dyslexia called auditory dyslexia. (Inability to distinguish between similar sounds) We found Miss Becky on wyzants and seemed to connect with her almost immediately. Our son is very creative and Miss Becky who is herself an artist was able to reach him in ways that grabbed his attention in a firm but loving way. It was not long before Miss Becky became "Our Miss Becky". For our situation there is no "quick fix" but we have learned some great ways to help our son and we are making good progress as we all learn to deal with this challenge. If your child is struggling with reading I highly recommend Miss Becky!!
As an international student, college writing is a huge challenge for me. But with the help from Rebecca, I find interests and passion to learn how to writing. She also helps me a lot in my grammar part. So if anyone needs a writing tutor to improve his or her writing skills, I think Rebecca can help a lot.
Rebecca helped my son with AP World History, both the class and the preparation for the AP exam. She is extremely knowledgeable and made it interesting for him. Rebecca has the ability to add just enough detail to make things come alive, but yet she is able to stay on track and cover what needs to be covered for the class and exam. I would certainly use Rebecca again and highly recommend her to others.
Becky has been tutoring me for about a year. She helped me a lot on my writing, and I finally passed the SDCC exit exam after failing it couple times. She is very nice and help! When I was depressed, she encouraged me to believe in faith and told me to work harder. We have become good friends, and I think I will continue lessons with her.
As a new comer to America, I wanted to have some tutor to guide me English pronunciation, listening and speaking.
Rebecca pinpointed my wrong pronunciation, which I believe I could never find out myself. It was surprising that some pronunciation I had no doubt I'm good at was actually wrong. Now I'm pretty more confident about my pronunciation, though I need more time to get used to it.
Also it was fun to exercise "listen and repeat". At first, she read 4~5 words from a book and I was to repeat them. It was more challenging that I had thought. I usually forgot "a" or "the" and was confused with tenses. It revealed that I was lack of some grammar knowledge which I studied long ago but almost forgot. So it gave me direction to improve my English. Now she increased the words to a whole sentence and I can repeat it (not always perfect, but I see improvement very clearly).
These things may not sound so great for the natives, but for people whose mother tongue is not English, it should be very promising.
And Rebecca is open to my suggestion and opinion about the tutoring and very keen to change tutoring method to my request.
I think that anybody who wants to improve English should try her tutoring.
We have been using Becky for about 8 months now. My daughter loves her and looks forward to working with her every week. Becky reviews issues that may have come up during the previous week and is also able to work on some problems that my daughter will be introduced to in the upcoming week; as well as tests she has taken. This prepares her all the way around. My daughter's grades have greatly improved and her self confidence has increased as well. My daughter doesn't fear math like she may have used to. Becky's other great qualities are punctuality, patience, and a sense of calm about her. Becky is wonderful!
Had a disagreement over her handling of not being admitted by guard at our gated community. She left within minutes of not being admitted, giving us no chance to resolve it with the guard station, but insisted on being paid for the lesson.
This client forgot about me twice. I was turned away from the gate twice, with no place to wait: I was simply told to go.
The client agreed, in writing, both times, as the Wyzant record will show, that he was in the wrong to have forgotten to give an admission advisory to the guard at his gated community. Wyzant provides for compensation for tutors who arrive on time and ready and who are forgotten by their clients, in this case a disorganized client.
The client agreed to pay this fee twice, in writing, and then later complained that I owe him money.
He wants me to pay for his forgetfulness. He never organized for a Plan B in case he kept forgetting about me. My trip to his gated community is a one hour round trip.
He had given me five stars every time he graded me for improving his son's understanding of mathematics.
If he feels I owe him money, the cost of a cancellation fee or two, I'm happy to meet him in Small Claims Court, with all the documentation of our transactions through Wyzant.
I resigned from tutoring his son, whom I enjoyed assisting, on the basis of this man's unreasonable treatment of me.
With respect to all those who consider the exchange between myself and my former client Steve F.
Becky is a top notch tutor, capable of helping in several subjects. She strives to find the method by which the student learns best. She is patient; she is kind. Her understanding of and compassion for the student is very obvious.
Becky has been working with my daughter twice a week for nearly a year, commuting from Encinitas to Alpine and back. She has helped my daughter a lot in her studies. She has given her encouragement and helped her become more confident. She is patient and willing to go over things as many times as needed. We are sorry she will be leaving us as she and my daughter have become good friends.
Rebecca came over on Saturday, a few short days after having foot surgery, to tutor our daughter before we left on vacation. There is nothing that she won't do in order to help your child succeed! We are so thankful to have found her!!
Becky is not only knowledgeable but shares it in an appropriate encouraging way. She is warm and kind, something teens really need.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took extensive art history courses at the University of Rome, Italy, and also for my BA and MFA degrees at the University of California at San Diego. I've traveled extensively in Europe, England, Japan and Mexico in search of art and architecture over a long career as a photographer and exhibiting artist, whose work has been collected to museums worldwide. My current work in progress, Le Nôtre and Time, is a large suite of photographs, destined for publication, on the work of 17th century landscape designer, André Le Nôtre. I've taught art history and the history of photography at university level. I am passionate about this subject and would look forward to helping any student acquire a better understanding of the range of subjects art history comprises. I can also help edit art history papers and power point presentations.
I'm a very successful teacher of elementary math concepts to young children, older children, and adults. I make sure that students understand each of the basic operations, the order of operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percent problems, prime numbers, exponents, square roots, basic geometry, tables, graphing, and concepts like range, average, and median. I like to use the class textbook for whatever course the student is taking or to work closely with parents in a home schooling situation. I'm also very good at helping students translate word problems into correct math equations. I like to confirm the student's existing math knowledge and build on that in order to help the student become both increasingly strong in math skills and also retain understanding of everything we study together.
As a published writer, working editor, experienced teacher, and public speaker, I have a very detailed understanding of expression in the English language arts and am able to help students, from Kindergarten through university, older adults, and anyone learning English as a second language, to improve any aspect of their use of English. Some students might want an editor for a graduate thesis. Others might want help with basic grammar, reading comprehension, preparation for exams, or written work like essays. I truly enjoy assisting anyone who needs help to achieve specific personal, school, or business goals.
I am a very successful tutor for students who are either developing their ongoing mastery of English or who are just beginning to learn English. My students have come from China, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Poland, and I have helped them all to speak English more easily and with better pronunciation, as well as, to compose well-formed and grammatically correct letters, essays, and school work. I listen very closely to my students and help them build on their current knowledge of English. I'm a gentle and effective teacher and am always very happy when my students succeed in acquiring some new ability of expression in English.
I've been interested in geography since I was a child, when I became interested in maps and what they represent, various mapping techniques, exploration, and travel. When teaching, I present modern geographical concepts: physical geography (including weather systems, tectonic plates, land and rock formation, glacial ages, and the biosphere), human geography (the study of human society and human distribution based on land use), and integrated geography (the study of how physical and human geographies affect each other). I work very closely with the student's own text and can recommend useful and interesting internet resources to aid in visualization of complex and dynamic geographical concepts. I truly enjoy helping students investigate and build working knowledge of our planet.
I have taught students geometry with great success for many years. I emphasize reasoning, accurate calculation, the visual thinking necessary for accurate diagrams, and double-checking answers by alternate methods.
I use geometry in many aspects of my daily work as a teacher of mathematics and as a furniture designer.
I'm a professional writer and working editor, as well as, a teacher who has a great deal of experience in teaching English, from Kindergarten to university.
Correct grammar is a form of thought that enables the student to make powerful arguments and express clear thoughts that anyone can understand; so, it is a subject very well worth studying.
Also, any clear understanding and practice of grammar in one language will help immensely in the study of a second and third language.
Photographer, Becky C., who is an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award winner, is best known for the photographs she made for Robert Irwin Getty Garden, published by The J. Paul Getty Museum, which earned her rave reviews in a wide range of publications. Both The Times [London] and The Los Angeles Times Book Review called her photography for Robert Irwin Getty Garden, “exquisite”.
Becky’s photographs have been exhibited internationally and collected to major museums worldwide, including The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Los Angeles County Museum; The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; The Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Her images have, also, been published widely, including in LIFE, The New York Times, and Architectural Record.
I'm a very successful teacher of prealgebra concepts to young children, older students, and adults. I make sure that students understand the order of operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percent problems, prime numbers, exponents, square roots, basic geometry, tables, graphing, the calculation of slopes, and basic algebraic concepts. I like to use the class textbook for whatever course the student is taking (or to work closely with parents in a home schooling situation).

As a tutor who guides her students to achieve their goals and to do their best work, I teach a series of important study skills. I'm particularly interested in teaching students to make continuous improvements in organization, time management, test-taking strategies, smart use of references, double-checking sources, good note-taking, completing homework fully and on time, looking up unfamiliar words, speeding up reading while strengthening reading retention, fortifying powers of concentration, and much more, including sound and engaging essay-writing.
I've loved the study of words since I was a child and was encouraged by my teachers to study Latin and Greek and other languages. This background has allowed me to understand the history, composition, and use of words. I can show students how to make sense of unfamiliar words, memorize them, put them to good use in writing and in reading comprehension.
Writing is an essential way for a student to express both knowledge and imagination, but clear expression depends on sound sentence structure and logical flow. I can show students how to perfect the elements of grammar, the logical flow required for an essay, and the framework and necessary detail for longer written works.
