About Max

I am a 5th year classroom teacher from Fayetteville, Arkansas. I have taught in East Oakland, West Oakland, and most recently in San Francisco. I taught self-contained classes (all subjects) my first 2 years and then taught math for a year and science for a year. My youthful enthusiasm has allowed me to thrive in large classrooms. However, the real meat of teaching is in 1:1 and small group interactions.

The meaningful exchange between a teacher and a student in a small group cannot be replaced in a student's educational journey, and that's what excites me about tutoring.

Between high school and university, I have taken many higher level math classes and been successful in all of them.

I have taught 4th grade math, 5th grade math, and 6th grade math, and as such, I am also very familiar with the common core mathematical journey that students must take from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

I have a degree in Geology. I like to think Geology does the best job of combining many sciences into one (physical science, earth science, and even life sciences).

I have also taught, and will continue teaching, middle school science. I have taught whole, self-contained classrooms of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders (reading, writing, math, science, social studies). Small groups are a crucial part of the classroom, so I am very familiar with after school and lunch tutoring.

I'm a very enthusiastic young man, and I really enjoy working with students. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised by the lessons I can produce and execute. Please reach out to me with any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I graduated with honors from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Geology. Geology, as a field of study, has a wonderful balance of multiple sciences and math. I am well versed in physical sciences, earth sciences, and mathematics such as Trigonometry and Calculus.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

The first thing my son said after Max left was, "that was so fun!" We are happy to have Max helping out with math. My son is a fourth grader and enjoys math but gets stuck sometimes. Max showed him ways to understand that my husband and I could never. Max was patient, listened, and clearly knows kids and how to talk to them. We will definitely continue to work with Max in the future.
