The College of Wooster (B.A. in Biochemistry)
I am a full-time web developer in Denver with a passion for teaching! I graduated in the spring with a major in Biochemistry at the College of Wooster and have taken numerous college level classes primarily in biology, chemistry, computer science, and math. I feel I'm qualified to tutor any math up to advanced calculus, any biology or chemistry up to and including at the college level, and basic programming and advanced computer usage. I grew up in Mexico, so I am bilingual and would be a great Spanish tutor as well.
I helped tutor basic subjects to people trying to get their GED as well as people trying to learn English as a second language (most were Spanish speakers). This included meeting once a week for two hours for an entire school year. In high school, I also volunteered at an elementary school where I worked directly with kids on various subjects. Throughout college I tutored several students in Photoshop and calculus. I have knowledge in a wide array of subjects, so if you're interested in anything that I haven't listed, get in touch and I will see what I can do :). Gabriel completed two sessions tutoring my 10 yr old daughter in Java programming. One time was a face to face session and the other remote using Skype. Gabriel is on time, professional, approachable and friendly. It's going great so far, plan on using Gabriel on a weekly basis long term.
Gabe was a wonderful tutor! He arrived on time, and went over two computers with me slowly and completely to bring them up to the level I wanted, and helped me install new antivirus ware. Then we worked on a backup system and discussed when and how to use the external backup for all the photos I stored. We finished with downloading a group of Photoshop photos for me to practice on and a small review of how to get started in Photoshop. He was slow, yet thorough and considerate of the level of computer background I had (or don't have yet...). I would recommend him highly. Thank you!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was always interested in computer languages since high school, and learned C on my own and later took a computer organization class in college that dealt mostly with low level languages (mainly C) to understand basic things such as compilers and computer data where I continued to develop these programming skills. I even made a few basic games in C during high school.
I took a whole year of organic chemistry in college (two semesters) where I earned high marks both semesters and easily passed the ACS standardized test at the conclusion of the classes. I graduated Cum Laude with a degree in biochemistry from a reputable 4 year college in 2014.
I learned Perl as part of a job that dealt with using bioinformatics as well as a job dealing with automating data gathering from websites. These jobs were summer jobs, and I therefore gained a pretty well-rounded knowledge of the language and many tools, such as BioPerl (for bioinformatics), efficient text processing, and interfacing with web languages such as html and php.
I programmed professionally for a year at a medical technology company in Denver, which used PHP primarily. I have developed several websites for clients using modern Model-View-Controller (MVC) frameworks in PHP such as Laravel and Yii in addition to Wordpress.
I am self-taught in Python but programmed extensively in high school and took some college level courses that were taught in Python. I also know how to use web frameworks such as Flask and Django and have made a couple of applications in each.
