About Martha

I have 4 years experience teaching high school, and about 20 years experience providing technical support for my previous company's customers. I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories for almost 25 years. Technical support involves a significant amount of tutoring and coaching in the use of the products.

I love to help people, and always see the good in people. I have years of life experience as well, and easily understand people and perceive what's going on with them. I am very empathetic, and care very much about what happens to people I am trying to help.

I love algebra and had no trouble understanding it. I am not qualified to teach math other than algebra 1 or pre-algebra.

I have a Ph.D. in plant physiology from UC Davis, and graduated with a 3.9 gpa. I studied membrane proteins and am expert in relevant procedures for their study. I taught laboratory sections for biology, botany, and plant physiology.

I also have a M.A. in German language and literature, and love English language and composition. I am eager to learn how I can help you improve your grades in subjects that confuse you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballroom Dancing

I took ballroom dancing as a teenager, and have always loved to dance. I can waltz, foxtrot, jitterbug, square dance, and so some Latin dances.

English

I have a large general and scientific vocabulary, and I read a lot to relax. I have studied and used my knowledge of English language structure and function for years. I have a general secondary teaching credential from the State of California. I really enjoy helping people and teaching what I know.

Grammar

Using words correctly, having correct grammar, especially in your written work, improves your chances of success. I can help you understand grammar, so that correct usage becomes automatic for you.

Needlework

I usually produce two to three sweaters per year. I also knit infinity scarves, gloves, hand warmers with thumb covers, hats, and most any pattern if I can figure it out. I taught my neighbor how to start a crocheted baby blanket, and helped her knit a sweater jacket with pockets. I taught both my daughters to knit. I enjoy teaching knitting.

Sewing

I made a linen suit, with a lined jacket with bound buttonholes, for my high school graduation. I have made women's and men's pants with a zipper placket, no problem. I have made dresses, and even made my senior prom formal. I enjoy teaching others what I know and monitoring and helping you while you sew.

Vocabulary

I know several methods to help you learn new words easily. I understand the various meanings of a word and how each meaning applies in different situations. I know how to make our time together interesting and fun.

Writing

I can help you understand the English language so that writing will soon become easy and natural for you. I have written all types of non-fiction, including essays and research papers. I truly enjoy teaching and passing along what I know to others.
