About Rhonda

I have been working with students K through 12 since 2009 in a variety of subjects, and I love to spread the joy of learning to all my students. I specialize in reading fluency, reading comprehension, writing instruction, math instruction through Algebra 1, vocabulary development, and study skills.

I believe it is very important to tailor my lessons to fit the individual needs of each student; there is no one-size-fits-all curriculum, and I work closely with every student and parent to create a custom plan with clear goals. I use proven methods to help each student achieve their academic goals, and regularly assess to show results and provide regular progress reports. I am always willing to sit and listen to your needs and concerns regarding your child's tutoring plan.

Consistency is extremely important for students to make progress academically, therefore I like to create a long-term schedule if possible, and I try to be as flexible as I can to make sure that my students receive tutoring on a consistent basis. I also realize that high school students sometimes may just need help temporary study help in one content area, and if that is the case please contact me to see if our schedules are a good fit!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been tutoring since 2009, and the majority of my clients have been diagnosed ADD/ADHD. In the credential program at CSU Sacramento, I had coursework and classroom experience in adapting teaching methods to best serve ADD/ADHD students. A big part of what I do in one-on-one tutoring is help my ADD/ADHD students curb behaviors that are distracting them from their work, and help them find ways to focus and feel confident in their academic abilities.

Algebra 1

I have been working with math students since 2009, and a solid understanding of Algebra 1 is critical for students to master before moving onto higher level math. I use a proven and effective online program to guide students through Algebra 1 coursework, which ensures they fully master each concept before moving on, and it provides regular assessments, giving parents comprehensive feedback on their child's achievements in Algebra 1.

American History

Struggles with history curriculum are common for many students because most students do not know the best methods for retaining the amount of information required to pass American history tests- it is a lot of material! So with my students, I guide them through the material and help them with reading the texts, effective note taking, making flashcards, and answer any questions they might have along the way. I have helped students with Early American History, including the 8th grade Constitution test that is mandatory in most California schools, as well as high school level U.S. History and AP U.S. History.

Art History

I lived and studied in Florence, Italy, where I completed the majority of my art history coursework. I received a minor in Art History from Sonoma State University in 2007, and it is by far one of my all time favorite subjects. If your student needs help with Art History, I can make the subject fun and accessible for young learners.

Biology

I have helped students in middle school and high school study biology by teaching them effective study skills, vocabulary development in biology, and to assist them in studying for tests.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring K-6 students since 2009, addressing several areas of curriculum including but not limited to reading, writing, mathematics, history, and science. I have also taken several early education courses, including child psychology and early education methods, in order to provide the best educational services to my K-6 clients.

Elementary Math

I have tutored several elementary math students over the past five years by presenting grade-level content in a fun, engaging way to help them learn mathematical concepts children often struggle with.

English

My BA is in English with emphasis in secondary education, and my middle school and high school classroom teaching experience has been exclusively the subject of English. Reading, vocabulary development, and writing are my tutoring specialties!

European History

I have tutored World History, European History, and AP European History to help several students learn the vast amounts of information presented in these courses and achieve good grades. I have also helped students study for the AP Euro exam.

Grammar

My background in teaching English and pedagogical grammar has given me the tools necessary to assist students with learning grammar and writing grammatically correct sentences.

Handwriting

I have been a tutor for four years for grades K through 12. Handwriting is a subject that many of my younger students have needed help with over the years, and I use several different methods, including "Handwriting Without Tears," to help children master handwriting skills. Also, I have taken several courses in early childhood education, which helps me implement these methods effectively.

Literature

My BA is in English, and during my university coursework I studies many genres of literature, from classical, to poetry, to contemporary world literature. Many of my high school clients have received tutoring in reading and literary analysis.

Phonics

I have been tutoring and teaching Language Arts for 4 years, grades K-12, and reading and phonics is overwhelmingly my biggest request from clients. I use SPIRE phonics curriculum with my K-6th clients, which "is a comprehensive reading and language arts program designed for struggling readers and for students with learning differences. It incorporates total language instruction including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and comprehension."

Social Studies

Since 2009, I have helped several students overcome their fear of a Social Studies curriculum. Many students get scared by the sheer amount of information in History and Social Studies, but I help them break it down into small sections, teach them how to take comprehensive notes, create graphic organizers, study guides, flashcards, and how to ace their history tests. I have assisted many students to achieve their academic goals in Social Studies at the 8-12th grade level, including US History, World History, AP European History (including practicing for the AP exam), Economics and Government.

Study Skills

After 4 years of tutoring students in middle school and high school, teaching three freshman English classes, and 2 eighth grade English classes, I am very knowledgeable about what it takes for students to succeed in school. I have helped dozens of students by creating a study program that focuses on organization, time management, and the use of study tools like graphic organizers, flashcards, outlining, annotation, and more.
