About Debra

I am a credentialed Spanish bilingual teacher with many years of teaching experience. I enjoy teaching younger children ages 4-12 in small groups or in a one-on-one situation. I provide my own reading assessment, designed to identify which skills the student needs to strengthen in order to be a proficient reader. Based on my assessment, I create and provide individualized lessons designed to help the student master phonetic components of reading as well as increase the student's "sight" reading vocabulary. I believe that learning should be fun and memorable for my students so I use a variety of teaching strategies, such as, games, art activities, and outdoor activities designed to help the student become a fluent and enthusiastic reader.

In addition, I offer private beginning Spanish lessons as well as tutoring in advanced Spanish. As part of my classroom teaching experience, I taught a Spanish bi-lingual Kindergarten Kindergarten for five years in the Bay Area. As a result, I have many fun and interesting learning materials to share with my students.

In the area of English, I am very proficient at helping students learn grammatical structures and become skilled writers. I enjoy finding ways to help the child have creative writing experiences.

Finally, I offer private piano lessons. I offered piano lessons for the past several years to students aged 5-12 years old.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have formerly taught a K-1-2 class for four years in public school, as well as served as a long-term sub in a 3rd grade class. In addition, I have successfully tutored students grades K-6 for the past 10 years. I endeavor to give my students a successful learning experience through personalized lessons designed to meet their specific needs. Furthermore, I create a positive learning environment for my students through the use of creative teaching techniques that make learning fun for my students.

Phonics

I am a teacher with a multiple-subjects credential. For five years I taught a Spanish-bilingual Kindergarten class. In addition, for the past ten years I have successfully privately tutored students who were in need of help with phonics and reading. My specialty is finding ways to make learning fun for the student.

Piano

I have taught piano lessons for the past ten years. I use learning games to help my students become adept at recognizing, reading, and playing music. I am an enthusiastic and patient piano teacher.

Portuguese

I majored in Portuguese at Cal State, Hayward. In addition, as part of my efforts to become fluent in Portuguese, I took a summer course in Portuguese language, linguistics, and literature at the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

For two years, I taught a Portuguese bi-lingual K-1-2 class in Newark, California. I also taught a semester of Portuguese at a high school in Hayward for college credits.

I have a strong knowledge of both the Portuguese language and culture.

Reading

I am a credentialed teacher with many years of experience teaching both in the classroom and privately. In addition, I have worked with a reading specialist which has added to my knowledge of successful teaching techniques for reading students.

Spanish

I am a credentialed Spanish bi-lingual teacher with many years of teaching experience. For five years, I taught a Spanish bi-lingual Kindergarten class. As part of my duties as teacher, I conferenced with parents in Spanish. I consider myself to be fluent in Spanish and enjoy teaching Spanish to students.

Study Skills

I am a credentialed Spanish bi-lingual teacher with many years of teaching and tutoring experience. In preparation for the BCLAD test required to receive my credential, I had to take classes in a variety of subjects including the methodology of teaching students with English as a second language. I was given an extensive amount of studying which involved a fair amount of reading comprehension and analytical thinking. I feel that I am very proficient at studying and test-taking.
